The DIN 5035 standard - lighting with
artificial light - gives guidelines for
planning of lighting equipment. With
regard to this, the following quality
criteria must be considered:
• Adequate lighting level
• Correct luminaire power density
distribution
• Limitation of direct glare
• Correct light direction and shadow effects
• Light colour and colour rendering
suitable for the intended purpose
The guidelines of part 2 of the standard,
which correspond to the workplace
guidelines ASR 7/3, are relevant to
planning and checking of lighting
equipment for work places with regard to
the necessary lighting level. Because
visual capacity data is objective, planning
calculations must be carried out to define
the number of lamps and luminaires
necessary to achieve the desired
illumination level.. This should be done
with consideration of initial cost and
energy consumption to arrive at the
optimal lighting solution. Furthermore
the form and the colour of the luminaire
can contribute to the overall aesthetic and
also to the total environment.
General lighting technology remarks
The catalogue includes for all luminaires
the most important factors regarding
their optical performance on the product
pages, to make the product selection
process easier.
1 Light output
The measured light output is used to
assess the luminaire with regard their
suitability for special applications. The
representation of the light output values
is shown in the polar diagram in the
transverse direction (C 0 – C 180 ) and the
axial direction (C 90 – C 270 ). The values are
expressed in Candelas per 1000 Lumen
(cd/klm).
2 Total light output ratio
The operating efficiency of a luminaire
(LOR) is the ratio of the light output which
exits the luminaire to the sum of the total
light output of all installed lamps. The
value is determined by measuring the
luminaire in normal operation and at an
ambient temperature of 25°C.
3 Light distribution
In the 5th issue of “Projection of interior
lighting equipment ”, room effectiveness
tables are listed for standard luminaires.
To use these tables the classification of a
luminaire to DIN 5040 standard (e.g. A50)
is necessary and also the light distribution
factors φu, φsu and φso.
4 Number of luminaires in room
The table gives for varying room sizes the
required number of luminaires for
different nominal illumination levels for
quick light planning.
The table values are defined as follows:
• Room length = room width x 1,6
(standard room to LiTG)
• Luminaires are distributed evenly in
the room
• Luminaire height (Lh) above the floor:
Lh = 2,5 m and 3 m or as stated. Lh
corresponds to the room height for
recessed and surface mounted
luminaires. A pendant drop of 0,5 m for
suspended luminaires is assumed
(actual room height = Lh + 0,5m)
• Work plane height: 0,85 m
• Reflection factors ρ: ceiling 70%, walls
50%, floor 20%
• The maintenance factor considers the
decline of the light output through dirt
build up and aging of the lamps,
luminaires and rooms: 0,8
• Lamp lumen output as stated
The conversion factor f1 is valid for other
lamp values or types (e.g. T8 lamps 36W
instead of 58W) and / or other control
gear (e.g. switchstart instead of HFG). The
number of luminaires is multiplied by the
conversion factor.
Hint: any corresponding regulations (e.g.
workplace regulations, building
regulations, etc.) should be observed
when planning work places. An adequate
room height is also necessary to provide
hygienic, ventilation technical and
psychological comfort.
