In this case, <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r’s argument prevailed and <strong>the</strong> boy was discharged. 560Ano<strong>the</strong>r runaway from <strong>the</strong> same school, Kenneth Thompson, told <strong>the</strong> police, “I ama Treaty Indian of Assiniboine Indian Reserve, I am 17 year of Age. I wish to state <strong>the</strong>reason I ran away from school was because I have to work too hard in fact I do notstudy at all. I am working around <strong>the</strong> school all <strong>the</strong> time. I consider if I have to work Imay as well work at home <strong>for</strong> my fa<strong>the</strong>r.” 561 Despite his argument, he was returned to<strong>the</strong> school. 562Indian agents often referred to ongoing truancy issues at specific schools as “epidemics.”The agents viewed such epidemics as a sign of underlying problems at aschool. In 1928, Indian agent J. Waddy wrote that at <strong>the</strong> Anglican school in The Pas,“hardly a day goes bye [sic] that one or more do not take leave on <strong>the</strong>ir own account.” 563In 1935, ten pupils ran away from <strong>the</strong> Birtle, Manitoba, school. 564 In <strong>the</strong> closing yearsof <strong>the</strong> 1930s, <strong>the</strong> Shubenacadie school in Nova Scotia experienced continual truancyproblems. It was not uncommon <strong>for</strong> some students to make numerous attempts toleave <strong>the</strong> school. On <strong>the</strong> morning of July 7, 1937, Andrew Julian decided not to join<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r boys assigned to milk <strong>the</strong> school’s dairy herd. Instead, he headed <strong>for</strong> Truro,where he was reported as being sighted in <strong>the</strong> rail yard. He was not located until <strong>the</strong>end of <strong>the</strong> month. By <strong>the</strong>n, he had made it to Nyanza in Cape Breton, a distance of 260miles (418.4 kilometres) from <strong>the</strong> school. 565 The following year, Steven Labobe (alsogiven as LaBobe) managed to make it back to his home on Prince Edward Island. Theprincipal decided not to demand <strong>the</strong> boy’s return. 566 O<strong>the</strong>r boys were not so lucky.One boy, who ran away five times, was eventually placed in a private re<strong>for</strong>matory. 567Many students said <strong>the</strong>y ran away to escape <strong>the</strong> discipline of <strong>the</strong> school. KenLacquette attended residential schools in Brandon and Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.“They used to give us straps all <strong>the</strong> time with our pants down <strong>the</strong>y’d give us strapsright in <strong>the</strong> public. Then … this started happening, after awhile when I was getting oldenough I started taking off from <strong>the</strong>re, running away.” 568 O<strong>the</strong>rs were seeking to escapesomething far more sinister than corporal punishment. After being subjected to ongoingsexual abuse, Anthony Wilson ran away from <strong>the</strong> Alberni school. 569In <strong>the</strong> 1940s, Arthur McKay regularly ran away from <strong>the</strong> Sandy Bay school. “I didn’teven know where my home was, <strong>the</strong> first time right away. But <strong>the</strong>se guys are <strong>the</strong> ones;my friends were living in nearby reserve, what <strong>the</strong>y call Ebb and Flow, that’s where<strong>the</strong>y were going so I followed.” 570 Ivan George and a group of his friends ran awayfrom <strong>the</strong> Mission, British Columbia, school when he was eleven years old. They werestrapped on <strong>the</strong>ir return. Despite this, he ran away two more times that school year. 571Muriel Morrisseau ran away from <strong>the</strong> Fort Alexander school almost every yearshe was at <strong>the</strong> school. The experience was often frightening. “I remember runningaway again trying to cross <strong>the</strong> river and it started freezing up, we all got scared, wehad to come back again with a tail under our legs.” 572 Isaac Daniels ran away from <strong>the</strong>Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, school with two older boys.
