When he arrivedat <strong>the</strong> school, he was told to hand in this outfit in exchange <strong>for</strong> school clothing. “Thatwas <strong>the</strong> last time I saw my new clo<strong>the</strong>s. Dare not ask questions.” 17 Martin Nicholasof Nelson House, Manitoba, went to <strong>the</strong> Pine Creek, Manitoba, school in <strong>the</strong> 1950s.“My mom had prepared me in Native clothing. She had made me a buckskin jacket,beaded with fringes.… And my mom did beautiful work, and I was really proud of myclo<strong>the</strong>s. And when I got to residential school, that first day I remember, <strong>the</strong>y strippedus of our clo<strong>the</strong>s.” 18 On her arrival at <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian school in Kenora, Ontario, LornaMorgan was wearing “<strong>the</strong>se nice little beaded moccasins that my grandma had mademe to wear <strong>for</strong> school, and I was very proud of <strong>the</strong>m.” She said <strong>the</strong>y were taken fromher and thrown in <strong>the</strong> garbage. 19Gilles Petiquay, who attended <strong>the</strong> Pointe Bleue school, was shocked by <strong>the</strong> fact thateach student was assigned a number. “I remember that <strong>the</strong> first number that I had at<strong>the</strong> residential school was 95. I had that number—95—<strong>for</strong> a year. The second numberwas number 4. I had it <strong>for</strong> a longer period of time. The third number was 56. I also keptit <strong>for</strong> a long time. We walked with <strong>the</strong> numbers on us.” 20Older bro<strong>the</strong>rs were separated from younger bro<strong>the</strong>rs, older sisters were separatedfrom younger sisters, and bro<strong>the</strong>rs and sisters were separated from each o<strong>the</strong>r. WilburAbrahams climbed up <strong>the</strong> steps to <strong>the</strong> Alert Bay school behind his sisters and startedfollowing <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> girls’ side of <strong>the</strong> school.
