In it, Canada was primarily valued <strong>for</strong> its farmland and as a captive market <strong>for</strong>British goods. Starting in<strong>the</strong> sixteenth century, European states gained control of Indigenous peoples’ landsthroughout <strong>the</strong> world. It was an era of mass migration. Millions of Europeans arrivedas colonial settlers in nearly every part of <strong>the</strong> world. Millions of Africans were transportedin <strong>the</strong> European-led slave trade, in which coastal Africans collaborated.Traders from India and China spread throughout <strong>the</strong> Red Sea and Indian Ocean,bringing with <strong>the</strong>m indentured servants whose lives were little different from those ofslaves. 44 The activities of explorers, farmers, prospectors, trading companies, or missionariesoften set <strong>the</strong> stage <strong>for</strong> expansionary wars, <strong>the</strong> negotiation and <strong>the</strong> breakingof Treaties, attempts at cultural assimilation, and <strong>the</strong> exploitation and marginalizationof <strong>the</strong> original inhabitants of <strong>the</strong> colonized lands. 45 Over time, Indigenous childrenin places as distant from one ano<strong>the</strong>r as East Africa, Australia, and Siberia would beseparated from <strong>the</strong>ir parents and sent to residential schools. 46
