Commission activities • 29The Commission established its head office in Winnipeg, Manitoba, retained asmall Ottawa office, and opened satellite offices in Vancouver, British Columbia;Hobbema, Alberta; and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.In recognition of <strong>the</strong> unique cultures of <strong>the</strong> Inuit, and of <strong>the</strong>ir experiences and <strong>the</strong>impacts of residential schools on <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> Commission also established an InuitSub-Commission. Seven regional liaison officers were hired with advice from <strong>the</strong>irssc and were assigned responsibility to work in <strong>the</strong> following regions: Québec andAtlantic Canada, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, andYukon and <strong>the</strong> Northwest Territories.Meeting from coast to coastDuring <strong>the</strong> six years of its operation, <strong>the</strong> Commission held events in all parts of<strong>the</strong> country. The largest and most visible of <strong>the</strong>se were <strong>the</strong> National Events held inWinnipeg, Inuvik, Halifax, Saskatoon, Montreal, Vancouver, and Edmonton betweenJune 2010 and March 2014. The Commission estimates <strong>the</strong>re were as many as 155,000visits to <strong>the</strong> seven National Events; over 9,000 residential school Survivors registeredto attend <strong>the</strong>m (while many o<strong>the</strong>rs attended but did not register). 1 To augment itsstatement-ga<strong>the</strong>ring activities and to help build public interest and participation inits National Events, <strong>the</strong> trc organized Regional Events in Victoria and Whitehorse. Italso held 238 days of local hearings in seventy-seven communities across <strong>the</strong> country.The Commission also sponsored “town halls” on reconciliation at its VictoriaRegional Event in April 2012 and at subsequent National Events as a means to draw agreater number of visitors into conversation with <strong>the</strong> trc about healing and reconciliation.Members of <strong>the</strong> general public were invited to come <strong>for</strong>ward at <strong>the</strong> town hallsto share in<strong>for</strong>mation about what <strong>the</strong>y are already doing to support reconciliation andto describe <strong>the</strong>ir ideas about what more needs to be done.Statement ga<strong>the</strong>ringUntil <strong>the</strong> Commission was established, <strong>the</strong> voices of those who were most directlyaffected by <strong>the</strong> residential school experience, particularly <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mer students, hadlargely been missing from <strong>the</strong> historical record. The Commission made a commitmentto offer everyone involved with <strong>the</strong> residential school system <strong>the</strong> opportunity tospeak about <strong>the</strong>ir experience. The Commission received over 6,750 statements fromSurvivors of residential schools, members of <strong>the</strong>ir families, and o<strong>the</strong>r individuals whowished to share <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge of <strong>the</strong> residential school system and its legacy.
