have been in part as a reaction against the disquieting nationalistic impulses which
were, and indeed are, surfacing in the Japanese social scene. He preferred to talk of an
‘encounter’, of the need to prepare a more universal future for the younger generation,
and of the ‘global egg’ destined to incorporate all the world’s languages and forms of
culture, in an image which he may have borrowed from Richard Buckminster Fuller.
He was obliged to give up this aesthetic project all too early, having pursued it, like all
the other objectives in his life, with a smiling, implacable rigour.
