have been in part as a reaction against the disquieting nationalistic impulses which<br />

were, and indeed are, <strong>su</strong>rfacing in the Japanese social scene. He preferred to talk of an<br />

‘encounter’, of the need to prepare a more universal future for the younger generation,<br />

and of the ‘global egg’ destined to incorporate all the world’s languages and forms of<br />

culture, in an image which he may have borrowed from Richard Buckminster Fuller.<br />

He was obliged to give up this aesthetic project all too early, having pur<strong>su</strong>ed it, like all<br />

the other objectives in his life, with a sm<strong>il</strong>ing, implacable rigour.<br />
