Esse tipo de empresa representa um pilarfundamental para a economia de todos os países. No Brasil, sua importância social eeconômica é confirmada pelos índices estatísticos, que refletem o grande percentualde mão de obra ocupada e de empresas registradas. Entretanto, a maioria dos novosempreendimentos não completa os primeiros dois anos de atividade. Para alcançaro objetivo proposto, em um primeiro momento, fez-se um estudo dessas principaiscausas. Em seguida, efetuou-se uma pesquisa de campo para a coleta de informações.Com o uso da metodologia descritiva e por meio da pesquisa de campo, foramanalisadas 30 micro e pequenas empresas, clientes da empresa Serviços ContábeisMÉTODO, buscando mais informações sobre as causas citadas. A pesquisa identificouvários fatores que interferem na gestão das micro e pequenas empresas e que,acumulados, aceleram esse fenômeno. Os quatro principais são os seguintes: a faltade clientes e de capital de giro, a carga tributária elevada e a localização inadequada.Palavras-chave: Fracasso. Micro e pequenas empresas. Mortalidade. Sobrevivência.Sucesso.AbstractThis article aims at identifying and analyzing the internal and external causes thatmight lead to the success or failure of the micro and small businesses located inthe city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State. This kind of business represents animportant pillar in the economy of all countries in the world. In Brazil, the social andeconomic importance is confirmed by the statistics which point out a high percentageof employed workforce and registered enterprises. However, the majority of the newbusinesses do not complete two years of operation. In order to reach the proposedgoal, a study related to the causes of this fact was carried out at first. Afterwards, afield survey was carried out to gather information. The explicative and bibliographicmethodology and the field survey were used to analyze thirty micro and small businesses- all of them are clients of Serviços Contabéis METODO – aiming at gatheringmore information concerning the causes cited above. The research identified severalcauses that interfere in the management of the micro and small businesses andconcluded that the cause for the premature death of the businesses is due to severalfactors. When these factors are put together, they accelerate the phenomenon. Thefour major causes of the premature death are: lack of clients, lack of working capital,high taxation and inadequate location.Key words: Failure. Micro and small business. Mortality. Survival.
