Hvornår <strong>de</strong>nne overtagelse fandt sted, ved man imidlertid ikke med sikkerhed, men forskerne<br />

daterer <strong>de</strong>n generelt til slutningen af 7. århundre<strong>de</strong> f.v.t. 78 D<strong>og</strong> slår Richardson fast, at Athens<br />

interesse for <strong>de</strong> <strong>eleusinske</strong> mysterier vokser bety<strong>de</strong>ligt i <strong>de</strong>t 6. århundre<strong>de</strong> f.v.t. 79 Sammen med <strong>de</strong>t<br />

faktum, at <strong>de</strong>r i hymnen ingen spor er efter flere karakteristika for kulten, som ken<strong>de</strong>tegne<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>n<br />

un<strong>de</strong>r Athens kontrol, ty<strong>de</strong>r <strong>de</strong>t ifølge Richardson på en terminus ante quem midt i <strong>de</strong>t 6.<br />

århundre<strong>de</strong> f.v.t. 80<br />

<strong>Den</strong> sidste fastsættelse er med andre ord et skøn ud fra et meget usikkert grundlag, hvilket <strong>og</strong>så<br />

kan ses på inddragelsen af hans argumentum e silentio. Lingvistiske <strong>og</strong> stilistiske un<strong>de</strong>rsøgelser<br />

giver <strong>de</strong>rimod et mere 'objektivt' <strong>og</strong> solidt grundlag at bygge vi<strong>de</strong>re på, men i <strong>de</strong>tte tilfæl<strong>de</strong> hjælper<br />

sådanne kun Richardson til en fastsættelse af terminus post quem. 81<br />

Gennem grundige spr<strong>og</strong>lige <strong>og</strong> stilistiske analyser konklu<strong>de</strong>rer han, at hymnen er forfattet senere<br />

end, <strong>og</strong> in<strong>de</strong>hol<strong>de</strong>n<strong>de</strong> en bevidsthed om, The<strong>og</strong>onien <strong>og</strong> muligvis <strong>og</strong>så Ilia<strong>de</strong>n <strong>og</strong> Odysseen. 82 Hertil<br />

kommer et antal ord <strong>og</strong> vendinger, som ikke ellers ses i tidlig epik, et træk, <strong>de</strong>nne tekst <strong>de</strong>ler med<br />

<strong>Den</strong> <strong>homeriske</strong> Aphrodite-hymne. 83 Sidstnævnte spr<strong>og</strong>elementer angives pp. 43-46 i to lister. 84<br />

Triptolemos har ingen fremtræ<strong>de</strong>n<strong>de</strong> plads, men nævnes blot i rækken af <strong>eleusinske</strong> a<strong>de</strong>lsmænd, hvilket fuldstændig<br />

modsvarer hans bety<strong>de</strong>lige stilling i attisk litteratur <strong>og</strong> kunst. Dette gæl<strong>de</strong>r <strong>og</strong>så magtforhol<strong>de</strong>t mellem Keleos <strong>og</strong><br />

Eumolpos.<br />

Afslutten<strong>de</strong> indven<strong>de</strong>r han imod sin terminus post quem-fastsættelse, at <strong>de</strong>t kan synes usandsynligt, at hymnen, som<br />

har <strong>de</strong> fleste karakteristika for traditionel epik, skal dateres så sent som 6. århundre<strong>de</strong> f.v.t. (p. 11, n.1, med henvisning<br />

til Stiewe (1954), som af stilistiske grun<strong>de</strong> i modsætning til Richardson fasthol<strong>de</strong>r en datering til tidligt i <strong>de</strong>t 6. årh<br />

f.v.t.). Men Richardson modsætter sig <strong>de</strong>tte argument i en, som han selv siger, mere personlig end vi<strong>de</strong>nskabelig<br />

bemærkning: "Unfortunately, the boundary area between oral and literary epic is too uncertain to allow any firm<br />

conclusion on this basis. It may, however, be worth stating a subjective opinion, which is that on grounds of style and<br />

language a seventh-century date seems to me <strong>de</strong>finitely preferable to one in the sixth century. In terms of style the<br />

Hymn seems closer to the Delian Hymn to Apollo, to the Hymn to Aphrodite, and to the poetry of Alcman, than to the<br />

second part of the Apollo hymn, for which a sixth-century date seems probable, or to what survives of Stesichorus, for<br />

example. How subjective such opinions must be is obvious, especially as the dating of the other hymns is also<br />

uncertain." (p. 11) Spr<strong>og</strong>lige <strong>og</strong> stilistiske overvejelser bliver såle<strong>de</strong>s <strong>og</strong>så <strong>de</strong>t afgøren<strong>de</strong> for Richardson, men han er<br />

y<strong>de</strong>rst forsigtig <strong>og</strong> forbehol<strong>de</strong>n<strong>de</strong> i sin udtalelse.<br />

Hvad angår analysen af hymnens epitheta, må han, selv om han ikke selv skriver <strong>de</strong>t n<strong>og</strong>et sted, have læst Gaisser<br />

(1974). Gaisser konklu<strong>de</strong>rer ligele<strong>de</strong>s (p. 136), at hymnen i stil er tættere på Hesiod end på <strong>de</strong> andre hymner <strong>og</strong> uddyber<br />

<strong>de</strong>nne lighed. Hun omtaler <strong>og</strong>så digterens forkærlighed for sammensætninger med polu- <strong>og</strong> -stefanoj (p. 137). Hun<br />

konklu<strong>de</strong>rer (p. 137): "On the basis of the noun-epithet expressions we may say that the Hymn to Demeter, while <strong>de</strong>eply<br />

in<strong>de</strong>bted to traditional mo<strong>de</strong>s of expression as exemplified in Homer, contains many examples of non-Homeric usage.<br />

Only a small number of these are to be referred to linguistically new words or to more general linguistic phenomena<br />

such as the use of the digamma. The rest seem to result either from a loosening of the bonds of Homeric wordassociation<br />

or from the creation of new formulae."<br />
