48 Yuriy Denysenko, Kateryna Denysenko Architects from miscellaneous cities of Soviet Union and different countries did architectural projects for new Cherkassy: Architects from the Baltic States designed the Trade House; architects from the German Democratic Republic designed some buildings, the many architects from Russia, Kyiv and Cherkassy designed other buildings. New architectural ensembles were built. These architectural ensembles had high artistic quality. Cherkassy became one of the most beautiful and green cities in the Soviet Union. Cherkassy was an example of a socialist city. The architecture of the second half the 20 th century created the image of the modern Cherkassy city. The new epoch came after 1990. Socialism had many negative principles. But socialism had many positive principles too. The new epoch does not have such principles, which are: – Clearness of the functional plan of the city; – State property to town land and possibility to design all of the city or part of the city; – Design of a building and architectural ambiance as one general artistic and functional system. Our new time is the time of business. The general plan and the ensemble are not important for business. Each businessman wants a house or a part of building as the brightest advertisement. Architecture becomes a chaotic form. The architecture and cultures of the second half of the 20 th centuries become very valuable. But we have such negative tendencies: 1. The architecture of the last time is being destroyed: “Tourist,” a hotel by architect Natalia Chmutina, was an example of the soviet vanguard in the second half of the 20 th century (is on Picture 10): 2. Advertisements sometimes spoil the type of houses. Advertisements close and hide the architectural product. (Picture11). 3. The new buildings or the new image of the old houses disregard the requirements of the ensemble that already is there (Picture 12). 4. We must protect the street furniture, which will create the image of the past epoch. Yes, there is need to create new forms, but there is a need to save the past of the achievement. We must save the heavy castiron bench and tree in the garden of the central administrative house for conserving the image of the Soviet administrative ensemble. There is an interesting form of in the pillars of street lamps near the central administrative building (this building was created in 1954). The pillars have a pedestal, and they do not look like a modern project (Picture 13). They created the atmosphere of the past epoch. The urns (they have the form of the past epoch), which are near by central administrative building must be preserved (Picture 14). The protection of the architecture and environment ensemble of second half of the 20 th century must have such directions: Academic direction Researching the history and value of the architecture and urban design of the second half of the 20th century; The creation of archival and of scientifi c collection of documents, facts, history drawings of the architecture and subjects of the urban design; Creating, with the help of students of architectural colleges, universities and design colleges and universities, the collections of modern photos, measurements, drawings of historical houses and subjects of the urban design. The creation of 3-D computer graphical reconstructions of the houses, urban ensembles and subjects of the urban design in different periods for study. Architectural and urban complexes of the second half of the 20 th century have an important value: they formed the image of some modern cities and they are unique cultural monuments of the past epoch. 2. We need to protect not only architectural objects, but objects of a street’s design. 3. The protection and study of objects of architecture and street design are important problems for the conservation of cultural heritage. 4. The methods of restoration of architectural objects can be applied to the restoration of other elements of urban design (street furniture, engineering equipment and other elements). They are: a) preservation b) restoration c) renewal.
