them. By him, moreover, fell Antiphus, a wonderful captain<br />

of the Greeks was he. Then came Achilles from the side of<br />

the Greeks and cut up the Trojans, so that many h<strong>und</strong>reds<br />

of them fell by him. Then he killed two champions and two<br />

chief- warriors of the Trojans, namely Lycaon and Euphronius.<br />

There was no pause to the fighting every single day to the<br />

end of thirty days. There were layers, then, and great heaps<br />

of human bodies between the city and the camp at that season.<br />

1115. Now when Priam saw that countless hosts of his<br />

people had fallen through the greater force that had come<br />

out of Greece and out of Mysia, he sent to seek a truce of<br />

six months. Agamemnon granted that, by advice of the wor-<br />

thies of the Greeks.<br />

1119. The time of the battle came. A cruel conflict is<br />

fought on this side and that. Many most mighty captains fell<br />

in each of the two hosts. Multitudes were wo<strong>und</strong>ed. Abun-<br />

dant was the paean ro<strong>und</strong> a hero's head there. There, then,<br />

they ceased not fighting for the space of twelve days.<br />

1123. Thereafter Agamemnon sent to seek a truce of<br />

thirty days. Priam granted that, by the advice of the Trojans<br />

and by the advice of Hector son of Priam.<br />

1126. Now when the time of battle arrived, it came to<br />

pass that Andromache, Hector's wife, saw a grim, execrable<br />

vision concerning her husband. This was the vision. A great<br />

image had Hector in the archway that he held of the city,<br />

his own image there in sooth, and the image of his horse be-<br />

neath him. Now Andromache saw its head fall from that<br />

image. Andromache after rising out of her éleep, kept silence<br />

as to that thing 1<br />

; (but) she declares the vision to Hector, and<br />

began dissuading him from entering the battle on that day.<br />

When Hector heard that, he said that it was not good advice,<br />

and he began upbraiding his wife keenly and said: „I will in<br />

nowise give up my valour or my prowess for a woman's counsel."<br />

1137. Now when Hector took his fighting-dress of battle<br />
