Pheres, a Greek, fell after (receiving) many wo<strong>und</strong>s from Sar-<br />

pcdou. So Sarpedon returned, covered with blood and wo<strong>und</strong>s,<br />

to his house.<br />

1254. So while they were fighting, many leaders fell on<br />

each of the two sides; but of champions and heroes more fell<br />

of the Trojans. Now when the Trojans were sore pressed 1<br />

they sent to seek a respite. While the truces lasted they<br />

buried their dead, they tended their wo<strong>und</strong>ed.<br />

1259. It was safe then, for Trojans to wander about in<br />

the camp of the Greeks, while the truces were lasting duly;<br />

and it was safe for Greeks to go into Troy.<br />

1262. Then Agamemnon and Demophoon were summoned<br />

into the council-house to Palamedes, the king of the Greeks,<br />

that they might go into Moesia to fetch thereout tribute of corn<br />

from Telephus son of Hercules, the steward of Moesia. „It is<br />

likely," saith Palamedes, „that Agamemnon will deem it irksome,<br />

after being on the throne, to be sent on an embassy." „I will<br />

not, however, deem it irksome", saith Agamemnon, „to go at<br />

thy behest."<br />

1269. Now as to Palamedes, he fortified the camp and<br />

built lofty towers all ro<strong>und</strong> about it. Howbeit, the Trojans<br />

marvelled, what caused the Greeks to repair the camp, and<br />

renew the ramparts, and extend the forts and the palisades,<br />

and to prepare every thing.<br />

1273. Now when Hector had been a full year in (his)<br />

grave, forth from their city fared outside Andromache Hector's<br />

wife, and Priam son of Laomedon, and Hecuba Priam's wife,<br />

and Polyxena Priam's daughter, and Alexander Priam's son,<br />

and Troilus Priam's son, and Deiphobus Priam's son, and hosts<br />

and multitudes along with them, to hold funeral games for<br />

Hector. Then it came to pass that Achilles was in the gate<br />
