<strong>ITALY</strong> - 4 Wastewater<br />

C4.3.4.3.3. First flush shall be separated, treated and considered as industrial<br />

wastewater in the following cases:<br />

C4.3.4.3.3.1. Courtyards, with an extension > 2,000 m 2 (21,527 ft 2 ),<br />

serving car repair shops, body shops, car washes and wastewater treatment plants;<br />

C4.3.4.3.3.2. Parking areas, with an extension > 5,000 m 2 (53,820 ft 2 ), of<br />

installations listed in Table 4.9;<br />

C4.3.4.3.3.3. Other non-roofed paved area of installations listed in Table<br />

4.9 for which the Competent Authority has required treatment only for first flush;<br />

C4.3.4.3.3.4. Courtyards and parking of residential/commercial areas,<br />

intermodal areas, with an extension > 5,000 m 2 (53,820 ft 2 );<br />

C4.3.4.3.3.5. Surfaces in fuel stations.<br />

C4.3.4.3.3.6. Precipitation events are considered separate when they<br />

occur within a timeframe > 48 hours from each other.<br />

C4.3.4.3.4. Storm water runoff conveyed to a dedicated sewer system can be<br />

discharged to surface water or soil when it is derived from:<br />

C4.3.4.3.4.1. Public and private roads;<br />

C4.3.4.3.4.2. Courtyards, with an extension < 2,000 m 2 (21,527 ft 2 ),<br />

serving car repair shops, body shops, car washes and wastewater treatment plants;<br />

C4.3.4.3.4.3. Parking areas, with an extension < 5,000 m 2 (53,820 ft 2 ), of<br />

installations listed in Table 4.9;<br />

C4.3.4.3.4.4. Courtyards and parking of residential/commercial areas,<br />

public transit vehicles depots, intermodal areas, with an extension < 5,000 m 2 (53,820 ft 2 );<br />

C4.3.4.3.3 above.<br />

C4.3.4.3.4.5. All other surfaces not regulated under C4.3.4.3.1 and<br />

C4.3.4.3.5. Existing installations shall be compliant with the above by 8 December<br />

C4.3.4.4. Employee Training. Personnel who handle hazardous substances or perform<br />

activities that could contribute pollution in wet weather events, should be trained in appropriate<br />

BMPs. Such training should stress P2 principles and awareness of possible pollution sources,<br />

including non-traditional sources such as sediment, nitrates, pesticides, and fertilizers.<br />

C4.3.5. Septic Systems. All discharges to septic systems shall be permitted. The permit<br />

shall be obtained through the Italian Base Commander. Discharge to a septic system of<br />

wastewater containing industrial pollutants in levels that will inhibit biological activity is<br />
