ITALY - 4 Wastewater
(3) The above limits are not valid for discharges to the sea. Inlet areas are comparable to coastal seawaters,
provided that on at least half of any section downstream of the discharge, the natural variations of sulfates and
chlorides are not altered.
(4) During the permitting process of the urban wastewater treatment system, the Competent Authority will set the
most appropriate limit according to the environmental and hygienic-sanitary conditions of the surface water
receptor and according to the existing uses. A limit not exceeding 5,000 UFC/100 ml is advised.
(5) The toxicity test is mandatory. In addition to the Daphnia magna test, an acute toxicity test may be conducted
on Ceriodaphnia dubia, Selenastrum capricornutum, bioluminescent bacteria or organisms such as Artemia
salina, for salty water discharges or other organisms. If different toxicity tests are performed, the worst result
will be considered. The positive result of the toxicity test does not imply the direct application of the sanctions
but it requires an in-depth review of the analytical results to determine the origin of the toxicity levels and their
subsequent removal.
(6) Such substance shall be absent from the recovered wastewater dedicated to reuse, according to what set the
applicable limits for the wastewater discharge to soil. Such prescription is intended as compliant when the
substance is present in a concentration lower than detectable limits of the reference analytic methodologies, still
to be defined and updated. In the absence of this definition, the applicable limits are the detectable limits of the
table.
(7) The parameter value is referred to each single pesticide. In case of Aldrin, Dieldrin, Epta chlorine and Epossidic
Epta chlorine, the parametric value is 0.030 mu/g/l.
(8) For the recovered wastewaters coming from lagooning or phyto-depuration the applicable limits are those are
50 UFC/100 ml (80% of samples) and 200 UFC/100 ml (maximum punctual value).
(9) More stringent limits could be applied by the final depending on process requirements.
(10) In case of exceedance of threshold limits, the reuse shall be immediately interrupted and could be started again
only after the value of the parameter(s) is(are) compliant for the subsequent three consecutive samples
(11)Reported values may be defined differently at the Regional level l.
(12) In case of irrigation reuse values for total phosphorus and total nitrogen can be raised to 10 and 35 mg/l
respectively.
(13) In case of irrigation and civil use or chemical physical parameters threshold limits are set for annual average
values. In case of irrigation use threshold limits are set for each irrigation campaign. The reuse shall be however
immediately interrupted if the value of whichever parameter is > 100% of the threshold limit as for this Table.
(14) For Salmonella parameter the threshold limit is to be referred to 100% of samples. The reuse shall be however
immediately interrupted if Salmonella is detected.
