<strong>ITALY</strong> - 8 Medical Waste Management<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.1. Temporary deposit of infectious medical waste at the point of<br />

origin shall not exceed five days prior to being treated on site, transported to a WSA, or disposed<br />

off-site.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.2. If the stored quantity of infectious medical waste is ≤ 200 liters<br />

(52.83 gallons), the temporary deposit time at the point of origin can be extended to thirty days.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.3. Infectious medical waste shipped off base shall be recorded in the<br />

Waste Loading and Unloading Register within five days of its initial accumulation.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.4. Temporary storage and transport of sterilized medical waste shall<br />

be carried out separately from urban waste.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.5. Infectious medical waste will be maintained in a non-putrescent<br />

state, using refrigeration as necessary.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.6. Medical waste with multiple hazards (e.g., infectious medical<br />

waste or radioactive medical waste) will be segregated from the general hazardous medical waste<br />

stream when additional or alternative treatment is required. Different types of hazardous medical<br />

waste (i.e., infectious or non-infectious) shall not be commingled.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3.7. Temporary deposit of medical waste at the point of origin shall be<br />

conducted in a manner that does not pose a risk to human health. The medical director of the<br />

facility producing the waste is responsible for the surveillance and fulfillment of these<br />

requirements.<br />

C8.3.6.1.4. Storage sites of infectious medical waste must be:<br />

C8.3.6.1.4.1. Specifically designated<br />

C8.3.6.1.4.2. Constructed to prevent entry of insects, rodents, and other pests<br />

C8.3.6.1.4.3. Prevent access by unauthorized personnel<br />

C8.3.6.1.4.4. Marked on the outside with the universal biohazard symbol and the<br />

word “BIOHAZARD” in both English and Italian (RISCHIO BIOLOGICO), and properly<br />

labeled, indicating the type and nature of the stored waste and its hazards<br />

C8.3.6.1.5. Protective Apparel. All personnel handling infectious medical waste<br />

will wear appropriate protective apparel or equipment such as gloves, coveralls, mask, and<br />

goggles sufficient to prevent the risk of exposure to infectious agents or pathogens. Such<br />

protective apparel:<br />

C8.3.6.1.5.1. Shall be adequate to prevent the expected risks and shall not cause<br />
