<strong>ITALY</strong> - 6 Hazardous Waste<br />

C6.2.30.11. Special waste includes both non-hazardous and hazardous waste.<br />

Hazardous wastes are identified in the USEUCOM Waste List, or through analysis as per<br />

Appendix B.1. The re-classification of hazardous waste to non-hazardous waste cannot be<br />

obtained by dilution or mixing with substances resulting in a reduction of the initial<br />

concentration of hazardous substances.<br />

C6.2.31. Temporary Waste Storage Area (TWSA). A non-permitted area located within<br />

the installation fenceline where temporary waste accumulation and storage activities occur (to<br />

include hazardous and non-hazardous waste) before being transferred to a WSA site or picked-up<br />

for off-site shipment. Each TWSA must be designated as either volume limited or time limited,<br />

as described below.<br />

C6.2.31.1. Volume Limited TWSA. Hazardous Waste can be stored for up to 1 year if<br />

quantities ≤ 10 m 3 (353.14 ft 3 ).<br />

C6.2.31.2. Time Limited TWSA. Waste exceeding the volume specified in C6.2.32.1<br />

may only be stored for a period of up to three months.<br />

C6.2.31.3. The temporary storage of waste shall ensure the segregation of waste types<br />

with respect to technical-military standards and standards governing the management of the<br />

dangerous substances contained in the waste.<br />

C6.2.31.4. Military waste as defined in the list for Special Waste and waste originating<br />

from military vessels and installations supporting military defense and national security cannot<br />

be held in a TWSA more than 12 months, regardless of the quantity.<br />

C6.2.32. Transporter. The permitted person, agent, or company who physically transports<br />

waste on public roads.<br />

C6.2.33. TWSA/WSA Manager. A person on the installation with the operational<br />

responsibility for receiving, storing, inspecting, and generally managing the installation's<br />

TWSA/WSA<br />

C6.2.34. Unique Generator Identification Number. The generator identification is<br />

accomplished using the Unique Identification Number assigned by the Italian authorities.<br />

C6.2.35. Unique Identification Number. A unique number that the Italian authorities issue<br />

to any citizen, company, or public body (including foreign citizens residing in Italy) doing<br />

business or having related activities in Italy. The 16-digit number is required when filing<br />

numerous public and private documents. It can be compared to the U.S. Social Security Number.<br />

C6.2.36. Unique Waste Identification Code. The six-digit Waste Code (CER) listed in the<br />

USEUCOM Waste List that is provided for each waste. This number is used by installations to<br />

identify a known waste and to ease the waste management and record-keeping process.<br />

C6.2.37. Urban Waste. Waste produced in urban (municipal) areas, including:<br />
