<strong>ITALY</strong> - 8 Medical Waste Management<br />

C8.3.6.1.9.1. Spills of infectious medical waste will be cleaned up as soon as<br />

possible in accordance with the following:<br />

C8.3.6.1.9.2. Response personnel must comply with paragraph C8.3.6.2.5.<br />

C8.3.6.1.9.3. Blood, body fluid, and other infectious fluid spills must be<br />

removed with an absorbent material that must then be managed as infectious medical waste.<br />

C8.3.6.1.9.4. Surfaces contacted by infectious medical waste must be washed<br />

with soap and water and chemically decontaminated.<br />

C8.3.6.2. Mixtures of infectious medical wastes and hazardous wastes will be handled<br />

as infectious hazardous waste under DoD 4160.21-M (Reference (j)) and are the responsibility of<br />

the generating DoD component. Priority will be given to the hazard that presents the greatest<br />

risk. DLA Disposition Services has no responsibility for this type of property until it is rendered<br />

noninfectious as determined by the appropriate DoD medical authority.<br />

C8.3.6.3. Urban-Like Waste from Medical Facilities<br />

C8.3.6.3.1. Urban-like waste from medical facilities can be disposed of as urban<br />

waste (see Medical Waste definition). Urban waste that is classified as hazardous waste shall be<br />

managed in accordance with the criteria applicable to hazardous waste.<br />

C8.3.6.4. Radioactive Waste<br />

C8.3.6.4.1. Radioactive medical waste will be segregated from other waste streams<br />

and managed in accordance with Service Directives.<br />

C8.3.6.5. Sharps<br />

C8.3.6.5.1. Needles will not be clipped, cut, bent, or recapped before disposal.<br />

C8.3.6.6. Treatment<br />

C8.3.6.6.1. Medical waste will be treated in accordance with Table 8.1.<br />

C8.3.6.6.2. Disinfection and sterilization conducted at the waste generating facility<br />

are optional. Disinfection does not remove infectious characteristics from the waste; sterilization<br />

removes the infectious characteristics from the waste if it conforms to the following provisions:<br />

C8.3.6.6.2.1. Sterilizers must maintain the temperature at 121°C (250°F) at 1 bar<br />

(15 psi) 40 to 45 minutes, or a temperature of 134 °C (273°F) for 15 to 20 minutes at 2 bar<br />

pressure (30 psi), whichever is available at the medical facility. Records of the sterilization shall<br />

be entered in a sterilization log book.<br />

C8.3.6.6.2.2. The sterilization efficiency should reach a Sterility Assurance<br />

Level (SAL) value not lower than 10 -6 .<br />
