WASTEWATER
This Chapter contains criteria to control and regulate discharges of wastewaters into surface
waters, soil, subsoil, or into Italian sewer systems. This includes, but is not limited to, storm
water runoff associated with industrial activities, domestic, urban and industrial wastewater
discharges, and pollutants from indirect discharges.
C4.2. DEFINITIONS
C4.2.1. 7-day Average. The arithmetic mean of pollutant parameter values for samples
collected in a period of seven consecutive days.
C4.2.2. 30-day Average. The arithmetic mean of pollutant parameter values for samples
collected in a period of 30 consecutive days.
C4.2.3. Annual Average. The arithmetic mean of values for each parameter of samples
collected during 1 year.
C4.2.4. Average Monthly Discharge Limitations. The highest allowable average of "daily
discharges" over a calendar month, calculated as the sum of all "daily discharges" measured
during a calendar month divided by the number of "daily discharges" measured during that
month.
C4.2.5. Average Weekly Discharge Limitation. The highest allowable average of "daily
discharges" over a calendar week, calculated as the sum of all "daily discharges" measured
during a calendar week divided by the number of "daily discharges" measured during that week.
C4.2.6. Best Management Practices (BMPs). Practical practices and procedures that will
minimize or eliminate the possibility of pollution being introduced into waters of Italy.
C4.2.7. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5). The 5-day measure of the dissolved
oxygen used by microorganisms in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter. The pollutant
parameter is biochemical oxygen demand (i.e., biodegradable organics in terms of oxygen
demand).
C4.2.8. Carbonaceous BOD5 (CBOD5). The 5-day measure of the pollutant parameter,
CBOD5. This test can substitute for the BOD5 testing which suppresses the nitrification
reaction/component in the BOD5 test.
