<strong>ITALY</strong> - 8 Medical Waste Management<br />

C8.3.6. Criteria for Medical Waste<br />

C8.3.6.1. Infectious Medical Waste<br />

C8.3.6.1.1. Medical Waste Storage & Transportation Containers<br />

C8.3.6.1.1.1. Infectious medical waste will be segregated, transported, and<br />

stored in bags or receptacles a minimum of 3 mils thick having such durability, puncture<br />

resistance, and burst strength as to prevent rupture or leaks during ordinary use.<br />

C8.3.6.1.1.2. Sharps will only be discarded into rigid receptacles. Bags or<br />

receptacles (including rigid sharps containers) shall be placed inside a rigid puncture-resistant<br />

secondary container and hermetically sealed before being transported off site. The secondary<br />

container shall be cleaned and disinfected prior to any reuse.<br />

C8.3.6.1.1.3. Sterilized medical waste shall be segregated separately from urban<br />

waste, via proper non-returnable packaging of a distinctive color to distinguish it from other<br />

waste-containing packaging.<br />

C8.3.6.1.1.4. Infectious medical wastes classified under the USEUCOM Waste<br />

List with unique waste identification codes 18.01.03 and 18.02.02, shall be collected separately<br />

at the point of their generation. (See Table 8.1).<br />

C8.3.6.1.2. Marking of Storage Bags for Medical Waste<br />

C8.3.6.1.2.1. All bags or receptacles used to segregate, transport, or store<br />

infectious medical waste will be clearly marked with the universal biohazard and the word<br />

“BIOHAZARD/RISCHIO BIOLOGICO” and “INFECTIOUS MEDICAL WASTE/RIFIUTI<br />

SANITARI PERICOLOSI A RISCHIO INFETTIVO.”<br />

C8.3.6.1.2.2. Sharps containers shall be labeled with the words “SHARP AND<br />

PUNCTURING INFECTIOUS MEDICAL WASTE/RIFIUTI SANITARI PERICOLOSI A<br />

RISCHIO INFETTIVO TAGLIENTI E PUNGENTI.”<br />

C8.3.6.1.2.3. The bags or receptacles shall be shock-resistant, report the name of<br />

the medical facility of origin, the date of generation and be of a proper color in order to be<br />

distinguished from other wastes.<br />

C8.3.6.1.2.4. Containers of sterilized medical waste shall be labeled with the<br />

words “Rifiuti Sanitari Sterilizzati - Sterilized Medical Waste.” Containers of sterilized wastes<br />

shall also indicate the sterilization date. Containers shall be easily distinguishable from<br />

containers used for other types of waste by color.<br />

C8.3.6.1.3. Storage. Infectious medical waste (other than medical waste comparable<br />

to urban waste) will not be placed in chutes or dumbwaiters, and will be transported and stored to<br />

minimize human exposure, according to the following requirements:<br />
