<strong>ITALY</strong> - 4 Wastewater<br />

C4.3.1.3. Existing sources of urban wastewater not regulated under C4.3.1.1 and<br />

C4.3.1.1.1 to waters of Italy will comply with the following effluent limitations:<br />

9.0.<br />

C4.3.1.3.1. BOD5<br />

C4.3.1.3.1.1. The 30-day average will not exceed 45 mg/L.<br />

C4.3.1.3.1.2. The 7-day average will not exceed 65 mg/L.<br />

C4.3.1.3.2. TSS<br />

C4.3.1.3.2.1. The 30-day average will not exceed 45 mg/L.<br />

C4.3.1.3.2.2. The 7-day average will not exceed 65 mg/L.<br />

C4.3.1.3.2.3. The effluent pH values will be maintained between 6.0 and<br />

C4.3.1.4. Sewer Systems. The following requirements apply to urban conglomerates:<br />

C4.3.1.4.1. Urban conglomerates with a number of inhabitant equivalents (IE) ≥<br />

2,000 shall be provided with a sewer system for the collection of urban wastewater.<br />

C4.3.1.4.1.1. In addition, in the Veneto Region urban conglomerates<br />

with a number of inhabitant equivalents (IE) < 2,000 shall be provided with a sewer system for<br />

the collection of urban wastewater by the end of 2014, unless the cost-benefit analysis is<br />

disadvantageous or the construction is not technically feasible due to geomorphologic<br />

characteristics of the area.<br />

C4.3.1.5. DoD-owned or operated wastewater treatment systems with a capacity ><br />

2,000 inhabitant equivalents (IE) shall be equipped with a disinfection system, unless using<br />

natural treatment technologies (such as lagooning or phytopurification).<br />

C4.3.1.5.1. The use of chlorine gas or hypochlorite in the disinfection systems of<br />

urban wastewater treatment plants in the Veneto Region is prohibited beginning 8 December<br />

2012.<br />

C4.3.1.6. Discharge of any wastewater directly onto soils, and shallow subsoil is<br />

prohibited with the exception of the following:<br />

C4.3.1.6.1. Isolated residential areas or sites where connection to a sewer system<br />

is not feasible because of excessive costs and would not result in an increased protection of the<br />

environment (e.g., septic systems).<br />

C4.3.1.6.2. Overflow pipes serving sewer systems.<br />
