<strong>ITALY</strong> - 6 Hazardous Waste<br />

English, Italian, and in any other language predominant in the area. Water-reactive waste cannot<br />

be stored in the same area as flammable and combustible liquid.<br />

C6.3.8.5.9. Closure and Closure Plans<br />

C6.3.8.5.9.1. Closure. At closure of a TWSA and or WSA, HW and HW<br />

residues must be removed from the containment system including remaining containers, liners,<br />

and bases. Closure should be done in a manner that eliminates or minimizes the need for future<br />

maintenance or the potential for future releases of HW and according to the Closure Plan.<br />

C6.3.8.5.9.2. Closure Plan. Closure plans will be developed before a new<br />

TWSA and/or WSA is opened. Each existing TWSA and/or WSA also will develop a closure<br />

plan. The closure plan will be implemented concurrent with the decision to close the TWSA<br />

and/or WSA. The closure plan will include: estimates of the storage capacity of HW, steps to be<br />

taken to remove or decontaminate all waste residues, and estimate of the expected date for<br />

closure.<br />

C6.3.8.6. Additional Requirements for Ignitable, Reactive, or Incompatible Wastes<br />

C6.3.8.6.1. Special Requirements for Ignitable or Reactive Waste. Areas that<br />

store containers holding ignitable or reactive waste must be located at least 15 meters (50 feet)<br />

inside the installation's boundary.<br />

C6.3.8.6.2. Special Requirements for Incompatible Wastes<br />

C6.3.8.6.2.1. Incompatible wastes and materials must not be placed in the same<br />

previously held an incompatible waste or material. Containers that have been used for temporary<br />

storage of hazardous waste, and that will not be re-used for the same type of waste, shall be<br />

C6.3.8.6.2.3. A storage container holding a hazardous waste that is incompatible<br />

with any waste or other materials stored nearby in other containers, piles, open tanks, or surface<br />

impoundments must be separated from the other materials or protected from them by means of a<br />

dike, berm, wall, or other device.<br />

C6.3.8.6.2.4. Food products shall not be stored in containers previously used for<br />

hazardous waste.<br />

C6.3.8.7. Contingency Plan<br />

C6.3.8.7.1. Each installation will have a contingency plan that describes actions to<br />

be taken to contain and clean up spills and releases of HW in accordance with the provisions of<br />

Chapter 18, “Spill Prevention and Response Planning.”<br />
