<strong>ITALY</strong> - 7 Solid Waste<br />

C7.3.6.3.1. DoD installations shall select one of the following two methods for<br />

managing non-hazardous special waste temporarily stored at TWSAs within its physical<br />

boundaries:<br />

C7.3.6.3.1.1. Volume Limited TWSA. Waste can be stored for up to 1 year<br />

if quantities ≤ 30 m 3 (1,059 ft 3 ), of which ≤ 10 m 3 (353.14 ft 3 ), shall be for hazardous waste ; or<br />

C7.3.6.3.1.2. Time Limited TWSA. Waste exceeding the quantities specified<br />

in C7.3.6.3.1.1 may only be stored for a period of up to three months. The duration may be<br />

extended to one year if the temporary deposit is located on a small island.<br />

C7.3.6.3.2. Installations shall indicate in their waste management plan which of<br />

the two methods is being used for each TWSA.<br />

C7.3.6.3.3. TWSAs will comply with the storage limits in C7.3.6.3.1. When these<br />

limits have been reached, the generator must have the non-hazardous special waste removed for<br />

disposal or have it moved to a WSA. Arrangements must include submission of all appropriate<br />

turn-in documents to initiate the removal (e.g., DD Form 1348-1A) to appropriate DoD<br />

authorities responsible for removing the special waste (e.g., DLA Disposition Services) or<br />

preparation of the waste manifest when using an Italian-permitted company.<br />

C7.3.6.4. Waste Storage Area (WSA)<br />

C7.3.6.4.1. The operation of WSAs shall be permitted. Installations that intend to<br />

operate a WSA shall provide the Italian Base Commander with sufficient information to seek a<br />

permit (see Chapter 1 for the process). The basic information to be provided to the Italian Base<br />

Commander shall include:<br />

unless otherwise prescribed in the permit. When these limits have been reached, the generator<br />

C7.3.6.5. Non-Hazardous Special Waste Disposal<br />

C7.3.6.5.1. Special Waste Treatment. All special waste treatment (recycling,<br />

recovery, etc.) shall be permitted. Permits are granted for specific types of wastes and treatments<br />

and last five years. A simplified authorization can be obtained for the waste recovery activities<br />
