ITALY - 4 Wastewater
C4.2.31.2. Fresh surface waters intended to produce drinking water that may contain
nitrates at a concentration exceeding 50 mg/L (as NO3) in the absence of corrective actions
C4.2.31.3. Areas where discharges require supplementary treatment
C4.2.31.4. Lakes located at an elevation of < 1,000 m (3,281 ft) above sea level (asl) and
with a surface area of at least 0.3 km 2 (74.1 acres)
C4.2.31.5. Water bodies where traditional fish production activities are conducted
C4.2.32. Separated Sewer Systems. A sewer system with two conduits, one conduit for
conveying storm water and the other conduit for conveying wastewater.
C4.2.33. Septic Systems. An on-site system designed to treat and dispose of domestic
sewage. A septic system consists of a septic tank that receives the waste and allows the solids to
settle and an underground drainage field that allows the liquid to be absorbed by the soil.
C4.2.34. Sewer System. A conduit system for the collection and conveyance of Urban
Wastewater.
C4.2.35. Storm Water. Runoff and drainage from wet weather events such as rain, snow,
ice, sleet, or hail.
C4.2.36. Substantial Modification. Any modification to a facility, the cost of which
exceeds $1,000,000, regardless of funding source.
C4.2.37. Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The pollutant parameter total filterable suspended
solids.
C4.2.38. Total Toxic Organics (TTO). The summation of all quantifiable values > 0.01
mg/L for the toxic organics in Table 4.4, “Components of Total Toxic Organics.”
C4.2.39. Urban Conglomerate. Areas where the population or economic activities are
sufficiently concentrated to allow the collection and conveyance of urban wastewater to a
treatment system or a final discharge point, when technically and economically feasible
considering the resulting improvements to the environment.
C4.2.40. Urban Wastewater. Domestic wastewater or the mixing of domestic wastewater,
industrial wastewater, or storm water runoff, conveyed to a sewer system (including separated
systems) and originating from an urban conglomerate.
C4.2.41. Wastewater Reclaiming Treatment System. The system for the reclaiming of
wastewater, including any equalization equipment or storage of recovered wastewater located
near the treatment system before the inlet in the distribution network.
