<strong>ITALY</strong> - 8 Medical Waste Management<br />

C8.2.12. Medical Waste. A sub-category of special waste. Medical waste is a waste<br />

generated by any health-related activity (including hospitals, dental clinics, and veterinary<br />

clinics). The medical waste definition includes both infectious and non-infectious waste and<br />

excludes the following:<br />

C8.2.12.1. Wastes produced from kitchens during the preparation of meals<br />

C8.2.12.2. Wastes from catering activities and food residues, excluding those from<br />

departments with infectious patients<br />

C8.2.12.3. Ordinary trash<br />

C8.2.12.4. Empty packaging<br />

C8.2.12.5. Garden waste<br />

C8.2.12.6. Plasters, non-returnable sheets and clothes, medical towels, bandages and bags<br />

for urine (excluding material from infectious patients)<br />

C8.2.13. Medical Waste Requiring Particular Disposal Procedure. Expired or non-used<br />

pharmaceuticals, drugs and other psychotrophic medicines; non-identifiable body-parts; and<br />

animals waste from laboratory tests.<br />

C8.2.14. Radioactive Medical Waste. Any waste originated from a medical or health<br />

related facility contaminated with radioactive material (i.e., from radiology or nuclear medicine<br />

wards).<br />

C8.2.15. Sterility Assurance Level (SAL). The probability that the waste is not sterilized<br />

after the treatment. For the purposes of this Chapter, the acceptable SAL value is 10 -6 .<br />

C8.2.16. Sterilization. Reduction of the microbial contamination, to guarantee an SAL<br />

value of 10-6 . Process includes grinding, drying and volume reduction of waste.<br />

C8.2.17. Transporter. The permitted person, agent, or company who physically transports<br />

waste on public roads.<br />

C8.2.18. Unique Generator Identification Number. The generator identification is<br />

accomplished using the Unique Identification Number assigned by the Italian authorities.<br />

C8.2.19. Unique Identification Number. A unique number that the Italian authorities issue<br />

to any citizen, company, or public body (including foreign citizens residing in Italy) doing<br />

business or having related activities in Italy. The 16-digit number is required when filing<br />

numerous public and private documents. It can be compared to the U.S. Social Security Number.<br />

C8.2.20. Unique Waste Identification Code. The six-digit Waste Code (CER) listed in the<br />

USEUCOM Waste List that is provided for each waste. This number is used by installations to<br />

identify a known waste and to ease the waste management and record-keeping process.<br />
