<strong>ITALY</strong> - 7 Solid Waste<br />

hazardous waste whose leachate meets established standards, waste containing or contaminated<br />

with PCB in concentration lower than 50 ppm, waste containing or contaminated with dioxins<br />

and/or furans in concentration lower than 10 ppb, waste whose Total Organic Compounds<br />

concentration for reactive substances is lower than 5%).<br />

C7.2.18. Leachate. Any liquid percolating through the deposited waste and emitted from<br />

or contained within a landfill.<br />

C7.2.19. Medical Waste. A sub-category of special waste. Medical waste is a waste<br />

generated by any health-related activity (including hospitals, dental clinics, and veterinary<br />

clinics). The medical waste definition includes both hazardous and non-hazardous medical waste<br />

and, among hazardous medical waste, it includes both infectious waste and non-infectious waste.<br />

C7.2.20. Medical Waste Assimilated to Urban Waste. Medical waste declared by<br />

Municipal authorities to be urban waste.<br />

C7.2.21. Medical Waste Comparable To Urban Waste. Non-hazardous waste listed below<br />

from medical facilities:<br />

C7.2.21.1. Wastes produced from kitchens during the preparation of meals,<br />

C7.2.21.2. Wastes from catering activities and food residues, excluding those from<br />

departments with infectious patients,<br />

C7.2.21.3. Ordinary trash,<br />

C7.2.21.4. Empty packaging,<br />

C7.2.21.5. Garden waste,<br />

C7.2.21.6. Plasters, non-returnable sheets and clothes, medical towels, bandages and bags<br />

for urine (excluding material from infectious patients).<br />

C7.2.21.7. Provided that sterilization treatment is performed and provided that the final<br />

disposal is performed in an incineration plant for urban waste (or, in case of non-availability of<br />

the incinerator, the Regional authority has issued the approval for disposal in landfill): wastes<br />

produced by public and private medical facilities, including wastes from catering activities and<br />

food residues from departments with infectious patients; wastes from medications; biological<br />

wastes and their containers; wastes from diagnostic, therapeutic, and research activities; and<br />

wastes from departments with infectious patients or from facilities dedicated to their care.<br />

C7.2.22. Non-hazardous Waste. Any waste that is not identified as hazardous by the<br />

USEUCOM Waste List, or through analysis as per Appendix B.1. The re-classification of<br />

hazardous waste to non-hazardous waste cannot be obtained by dilution or mixing with<br />

substances resulting in a reduction of the initial concentration of hazardous substances.<br />

C7.2.23. Open Burning. Burning of solid wastes in the open, such as in an open dump.<br />
