prohibited. Known discharges of industrial pollutants to existing septic systems shall be
eliminated and appropriate actions should be taken to eliminate contamination. Siting of such
systems is addressed in Chapter 3, “Drinking Water.”
C4.3.6. Sludge Disposal. All sludges produced during the treatment of wastewater will be
disposed of under Chapter 6, “Hazardous Waste” or Chapter 7, “Solid Waste,” as applicable.
C4.3.7. Reclaimed Wastewater
C4.3.7.1. Reclaimed wastewaters shall comply with quality standards listed in Table
4.10. Reclaimed wastewaters can be reused only for the following purposes:
C4.3.7.1.1. Irrigation: irrigation of cultivated areas, destined both to the
production of food (for human or animals) or other products, irrigation of green,
recreational/sport areas;
C4.3.7.1.2. Civil: for the washing of streets in urban areas, for the use in heating
and/or cooling plants; in dual piping networks, separated from drinking waters. Their direct use
in residential buildings is prohibited except for toilet discharges;
C4.3.7.1.3. Industrial: for firefighting, in processes, for washing, in heating cycles
of industrial processes. Uses that imply the direct contact between reused water and food/
pharmaceutical products/cosmetics are prohibited.
C4.3.7.2. The reuse of reclaimed wastewater shall be permitted within the wastewater
treatment plant discharge permit.
C4.3.7.3. Separate distribution networks shall be provided for reclaimed wastewater in a
way to avoid cross contamination of drinking water.
C4.3.7.4. The whole distribution system for reclaimed wastewater shall be properly
marked and be labeled clearly different from drinking water systems.
C4.3.8. Complaint System. A system for investigating water pollution complaints from
individuals or Italian water pollution control authorities will be established, involving the
Environmental Executive Agent, as appropriate.
