ITALY - 4 Wastewater
Table 4.1.1-b: these areas shall be provided with Imhoff tanks, possibly followed by natural
treatment technologies (such as lagooning or phytopurification) or other systems having
equivalent or better performances. In the case of discharge onto soil or surface waters, the
treatment system shall ensure a 50% reduction of TSS and a 25% reduction of BOD5 and COD.
C4.3.1.1.4. The following requirements apply to domestic and urban wastewater
in the Tuscany Region:
C4.3.1.1.4.1. Domestic wastewater from isolated buildings or facilities
associated to a number of inhabitant equivalents (IE) lower than 100 and discharging to soil: the
buildings and facilities shall be provided with a septic tank (two-stage, three-stage or Imhoff
tank) and a dispersion system into the soil.
C4.3.1.1.4.2. Domestic or urban wastewater from conglomerates
discharging to surface water and associated with a number of inhabitant equivalents (IE) lower
than 2,000: these areas shall be provided with a treatment system refer to Table 4.1.2-a if
discharging to fresh waters or in Table 4.1.2-b if discharging to sea-water.
C4.3.1.2. All new sources of urban wastewater not regulated under C4.3.1.1 and
C4.3.1.1.1 and directly discharged to waters of Italy will comply with the following effluent
limitations:
C4.3.1.2.1. BOD5
C4.3.1.2.1.1. The 30-day average will not exceed 30 mg/L.
C4.3.1.2.1.2. The 7-day average will not exceed 45 mg/L.
C4.3.1.2.1.3. CBOD5 may be substituted for BOD5. CBOD5 limit, if
substituted for the parameter BOD5, should be at least 5 mg/L less than each numerical limit for
the 30-day and 7-day average for the BOD5 limit. The CBOD5 test procedure suppresses the
nitrification component in the BOD5 test procedure, thereby reducing the value or effects and
lowering the oxygen demand. When CBOD5 is substituted for BOD5, the following limits will
apply:
9.0.
C4.3.1.2.2. TSS
C4.3.1.2.1.3.1 30-day average will not exceed 25 mg/L.
C4.3.1.2.1.3.2 The 7-day average will not exceed 40 mg/L.
C4.3.1.2.2.1. The 30-day average will not exceed 30 mg/L.
C4.3.1.2.2.2. The 7-day average will not exceed 45 mg/L.
C4.3.1.2.2.3. The effluent pH values will be maintained between 6.0 and
