<strong>ITALY</strong> - 4 Wastewater<br />

C4.2.42.1. All waters which are currently used, were used in the past, or may be<br />

susceptible to use in commerce<br />

C4.2.42.2. Waters which are or could be used for recreation or other purposes<br />

C4.2.42.3. Waters from which fish or shellfish are or could be taken and sold<br />

C4.2.42.4. Waters which are used or could be used for industrial purposes by industries<br />

C4.2.42.5. Waters including lakes, rivers, streams (including intermittent streams),<br />

sloughs, prairie potholes, or natural ponds<br />

C4.2.42.6. Tributaries of waters identified above.<br />

C4.2.42.7. Waters of Italy also includes groundwater.<br />

C4.2.42.8. Exclusions to waters of Italy. Domestic or industrial waste treatment systems,<br />

including treatment ponds or lagoons designed to meet the requirements of this Chapter, are not<br />

waters of Italy. This exclusion applies only to manmade bodies of water that were neither<br />

originally waters of Italy nor resulted from impoundment of waters of Italy.<br />

C4.3. CRITERIA<br />

C4.3.1. Effluent Limitations for Discharges of Pollutants<br />

C4.3.1.1. All new and existing sources of pollutants that discharge into surface waters<br />

or Italian sewer systems shall be permitted (see Chapter 1 for the process) and shall comply with<br />

the effluent limitations of Table 4.1.<br />

C4.3.1.1.1. Urban wastewater treatment systems shall comply with a daily<br />

average. In addition, urban wastewater containing industrial wastewater shall comply with<br />

composite three-hour averages.<br />

C4.3.1.1.2. In addition, in the Veneto Region all new and existing urban<br />

wastewater discharges into surface water shall comply with the effluent limitations of Table<br />

4.1.1.<br />

C4.3.1.1.3. The following requirements apply to domestic wastewater in the<br />

Veneto Region:<br />

C4.3.1.1.3.1. Domestic wastewater from isolated buildings or facilities<br />

not conveyed to the public sewer system and associated with a number of inhabitant equivalents<br />

(IE) lower than 50: buildings and facilities shall be provided with an Imhoff tank and a<br />

dispersion system into the soil. The discharge permit may be included in the building permit.<br />

C4.3.1.1.3.2. Domestic wastewater from conglomerates associated with a<br />

number of inhabitant equivalents (IE) ≥ 50 IE and lower than threshold values of IE listed in<br />

September 2012 Italy FGS 4-5<br />
