<strong>ITALY</strong> - 15 ASBESTOS<br />

C15.3.2.9. Procedures to prevent the use of ACM in new construction.<br />

C15.3.3. Determination Prior to Demolition or Renovation<br />

C15.3.3.1. Prior to the demolition or renovation of a facility, the installation will make a<br />

determination whether or not the activity will remove or disturb ACM, and will record this<br />

determination on the project authorization document (e.g., work order).<br />

C15.3.3.2. The project authorization document will be furnished to the Italian Base<br />

Commander. Provide a copy of the plan a minimum of 30 days prior to start of the work.<br />

C15.3.3.3. Prior to demolition or renovation of a facility that involves removing or<br />

disturbing friable ACM, a detailed work plan will be prepared and furnished to the U.S.<br />

installation commander and the Italian Base Commander a minimum of 30 days prior to start of<br />

the work. A copy of the work plan will also be kept on permanent file.<br />

C15.3.3.4. Installations will remove friable ACM when the ACM poses a threat to<br />

release airborne asbestos fibers and cannot be reliably repaired or isolated. Removal activities<br />

will be conducted by permitted Italian companies.<br />

C15.3.3.5. Before disturbing or demolishing a facility or part of a facility, installations<br />

will remove all regulated ACM. Prior to commencing the removal activities, a detailed work plan<br />

will be prepared and furnished to the U.S. installation commander and the Italian Base<br />

Commander a minimum of 30 days prior to start of the work. A copy of the work plan will also<br />

be kept on permanent file. Removal activities will be conducted by Italian-permitted companies.<br />

C15.3.4. Disposal of ACM<br />

C15.3.4.1. When disposing of asbestos waste, installations will adequately wet all ACM<br />

waste and seal it in a leak-proof double container: a polyethylene bag with adequate strength<br />

(more than 0.15 mm (5.9 mils) thick) placed inside a second bag or a rigid container. Sharp-edged<br />

materials shall be packed separately. Bags shall not be filled over 2/3 of their capacity and shall not<br />

exceed 30 kg (66 pounds) of total weight.<br />

C15.3.4.2. All containers shall be labeled to indicate the presence of asbestos.<br />

Containers will be labeled in English and Italian languages. The label shall contain the following<br />

text:<br />

WARNING: CONTAINS ASBESTOS.<br />

Breathing dust is dangerous to health.<br />

Follow safety instructions.<br />

PERICOLO: CONTIENE AMIANTO.<br />

L’inalazione di fibre è dannosa alla salute.<br />

C15.3.4.3. If the ACM waste contains crocidolite, the words "contains asbestos “shall be<br />

replaced by "contains crocidolite/blue asbestos – contiene crocidolite/amianto blu.”<br />
