Once a system has been installed it is necessary<br />

<strong>to</strong> ensure that its continued operation is effectively<br />

moni<strong>to</strong>red. Those who fi nd themselves responsible for<br />

the means of escape within buildings will need <strong>to</strong> ensure<br />

that the emergency escape lighting system:<br />

➤ Is certifi ed as complying with BS 5266<br />

➤ Is subject <strong>to</strong> routine testing and inspection:<br />

➤ Daily <strong>to</strong> ensure maintained lamps are illuminated<br />

➤ Monthly <strong>to</strong> ensure each unit activates on a failure<br />

of the power supply<br />

➤ Six monthly <strong>to</strong> ensure that the unit maintains<br />

emergency operation for at least 1 hour<br />

➤ Three yearly (and after the fi rst three yearly test,<br />

annually) <strong>to</strong> ensure each unit operates for its full<br />

design period.<br />

The moni<strong>to</strong>ring of emergency lighting systems needs <strong>to</strong><br />

form part of the overall management of fi re safety.<br />

9.5.10 Signs and signage<br />

<strong>Fire</strong> safety signs and signing systems form an integral<br />

part of the overall fi re safety strategy of a building and<br />

are fundamental <strong>to</strong> the communication of good fi re<br />

safety management information. Clearly visible and<br />

unambiguous signage is essential for speedy escape,<br />

particularly in buildings where many of the occupants<br />

might be unfamiliar with the building layout.<br />
