Appendix 10.2 Example of responsibilities of fi re wardens<br />

A. In the event of an emergency or fi re<br />

1. Ensure that the fi re alarm is raised.<br />

2. If continuous alarm sounds, or when advised of an emergency, ensure that all personnel, including visi<strong>to</strong>rs,<br />

evacuate the building by the nearest means of escape.<br />

3. Wear a high visibility jacket, or waistcoat, so that you can be easily recognised.<br />

4. Ensure that staff are designated <strong>to</strong> assist disabled staff members, and that they are removed <strong>to</strong> a<br />

place of safety.<br />

5. Without danger <strong>to</strong> themselves, search all areas, including <strong>to</strong>ilets and kitchens, <strong>to</strong> ensure complete<br />

evacuation.<br />

6. Without danger <strong>to</strong> themselves, close all windows and doors, while undertaking the sweep of the building,<br />

employing the ‘search and cascade technique’.<br />

7. Direct all evacuated personnel <strong>to</strong> the designated fi re assembly point.<br />

8. Use portable fi re fi ghting equipment ONLY <strong>to</strong> aid safe egress.<br />

9. Report <strong>to</strong> the fi re incident controller, identifi ed by the wearing of a high visibility jacket or waistcoat.<br />

10. Prevent any re-entry <strong>to</strong> the building until given authorisation.<br />

B. In the event of an emergency or fi re not in your area<br />

1. On the sounding of an intermittent alarm, alert all staff <strong>to</strong> be prepared <strong>to</strong> evacuate, but <strong>to</strong> remain calm.<br />

2. Stand by and be prepared <strong>to</strong> receive further instruction.<br />

C. General duties<br />

1. Familiarise themselves with their work location, escape routes and their designated areas of responsibility.<br />

2. Be aware of disabled staff members off duty and ensure that staff are designated <strong>to</strong> assist them during<br />

an evacuation.<br />

3. Familiarise themselves with the location of their designated assembly point.<br />

4. In the event of being away from their place of work, inform their line manager, or deputy warden, so<br />

that they assume responsibility in the event of an emergency.<br />

5. Report all defects <strong>to</strong> line manager, or facilities supervisor, for action.<br />

6. Undertake initial and refresher training of new and existing staff in the fi re procedures.<br />

7. Maintain appropriate records.<br />

8. Assist in fi re drills.<br />

9. Attend any appropriate training <strong>to</strong> ensure fi re warden duties are carried out effectively.<br />

D. Routine duties – relevant <strong>to</strong> the designated area of responsibility<br />

Daily<br />

1. Ensure escape routes are clear and available for use.<br />

2. Check fi nal exit fi re doors are not improperly locked or blocked.<br />

3. Ensure all rubbish is being removed regularly, and that all materials are s<strong>to</strong>red safely.<br />

4. Ensure portable fi re fi ghting equipment and fi re signs are in place.<br />

Weekly – as per checklist<br />

Monthly<br />

1. Check fi re doors are in good condition and function properly.<br />

2. Check all electrical equipment is PAT tested in date.<br />

3. Check all fi re fi ghting equipment is in test date.<br />

4. Complete fi re log book and report defi ciencies.
