15.13 The Confi ned Spaces Regulations<br />

1997 (SI 1713)<br />

The purpose of the Confi ned Spaces Regulations 1997<br />

(CS Regs) is <strong>to</strong> prevent people being exposed <strong>to</strong> risks <strong>to</strong><br />

their health and safety from such work activities.<br />

The regulations place an absolute duty <strong>to</strong> comply<br />

with the detailed requirements on both employers<br />

for work carried out by their employees and on the<br />

self-employed for their own work. In the case of other<br />

persons working under the control of the employer or<br />

the self-employed person, the duty <strong>to</strong> comply is qualifi ed<br />

by the standard so far as is reasonably practicable.
