To identify the Mains Electrical Isolation Switch:<br />

Placed on the outside of cupboards, rooms that contain the<br />

mains isolation switch, often the mains switch will also be<br />

marked<br />

<strong>Safety</strong>: Care should always be taken when dealing with switch<br />

equipment and lethal electrical voltages<br />

Used <strong>to</strong> draw attention <strong>to</strong> a safe condition indicated by<br />

supplementary text when no specific pic<strong>to</strong>gram is suitable<br />

Sign placed on fire exit doors fitted with full width Panic Bars<br />

Door must be opened by applying pressure <strong>to</strong> the horizontal<br />

bar.<br />

Sign placed on single doors (normally), fitted with a Push<br />

Pad or Paddle<br />

locations of fire extinguishers<br />

in order <strong>to</strong> facilitate effective<br />

moni<strong>to</strong>ring, i.e. it can be easily<br />

seen that a fire extinguisher is<br />

missing from a particular<br />

location.<br />

This sign may be used <strong>to</strong><br />

indicate the location of a fire<br />

point. A fire point being an<br />

area where there is a cluster of<br />

emergency equipment, e.g. fire<br />

alarm call point, fire<br />

extinguishers and emergency<br />

telephones.<br />

This sign is used <strong>to</strong> identify the<br />

location of fire blankets which<br />

are normally provided in<br />

kitchens.<br />

The positions of internal fire<br />

hydrants will assist the fire<br />

service locating the necessary<br />

water supplies.<br />

Identifies a <strong>Fire</strong> Door that is a ‘Self Closing <strong>Fire</strong> Door’ that MUST<br />

be kept shut and unobstructed at all times<br />

Positioned at eye level on both faces of each leaf of self-closing fire<br />

doors<br />

Note: Door may be signed ‘<strong>Fire</strong> Door Kept Closed ’<br />

Identifies a <strong>Fire</strong> Door that MUST be kept shut and unobstructed at<br />

all times<br />

Used on fire doors without a ‘Self Closing’ devices, i.e. Cleaner‘s<br />

Cupboards, S<strong>to</strong>res and Plant Rooms or Service Ducts<br />

Identifies a ‘Self Closing <strong>Fire</strong> Door’ that is held open on electro<br />

magnetic devices which MUST be kept clear and unobstructed at<br />

all times. Obstruction may impede the closing of the door or<br />

shutter, which is released on activation of the fire alarm.<br />

Placed at eye level on doors or shutters, which close au<strong>to</strong>matically<br />

in the event of a fire<br />

Keep area clear of obstructions that may impede escape on an<br />

escape door or route<br />

Found on escape routes where onstructions may occur, e.g. on the<br />

external face of a fire exit door so that vehicles do not obstruct<br />

<strong>Fire</strong> Action Notices – provide information and instruction on what <strong>to</strong><br />

do on discovering a fire, or on hearing the fire alarm.<br />

Positioned at fire alarm call points or <strong>to</strong> accompany fire<br />

extinguishers, etc.<br />

General fire action notices are<br />

provided for all the occupants of<br />

a building and are normally<br />

located adjacent <strong>to</strong> fire alarm<br />

call points, s<strong>to</strong>rey exits or fire<br />

door exits.<br />

The positions of phones that<br />

may be used <strong>to</strong> report fire<br />

should be indicated and will also<br />

display instructions on how a fire<br />

or other emergency should be<br />

reported.<br />

The positions of fire alarm call<br />

points should be indicated with<br />

this type of sign particularly in<br />

areas where it may be necessary<br />

<strong>to</strong> identify the location of a<br />

manual alarm call point from<br />

some distance, e.g. in a large<br />

warehouse.<br />

Signs may be provided that give<br />

information relating <strong>to</strong> the<br />

operation of the extinguisher<br />

and include basic safety<br />

information.<br />
