➤ Thermometers should be provided <strong>to</strong> enable persons<br />

at work <strong>to</strong> determine the temperature inside a<br />

workplace and excessive effects of sunlight on temperature<br />

should be avoided<br />

➤ Workplaces should have suitable and suffi cient lighting<br />

(by natural means where reasonably practicable),<br />

including emergency lighting where failure of artifi -<br />

cial lighting will expose people at work <strong>to</strong> danger<br />

➤ Workplaces, furniture, furnishings and fi ttings should<br />

be kept suffi ciently clean and all surfaces of fl oors,<br />

walls and ceilings inside buildings should be capable<br />

of being kept suffi ciently clean<br />

➤ Waste materials should not be allowed <strong>to</strong> accumulate<br />

in a workplace except in suitable receptacles<br />

➤ Rooms where people work should be of suffi cient<br />

dimensions for health, safety and welfare purposes<br />

➤ Workstations should be arranged so that they are<br />

suitable for both the person at work and the work<br />

activity that will take place and should:<br />

➤ Provide protection from adverse weather<br />

➤ Enable any person <strong>to</strong> leave swiftly in the event<br />

of an emergency<br />

➤ Ensure that the person is not likely <strong>to</strong> slip or fall<br />

➤ A suitable seat (and footrest as necessary) should<br />

be provided where the work is of a kind that can or<br />

must be done seated.<br />

15.32.2 <strong>Safety</strong> requirements – regulations<br />

➤ Floors and traffi c routes should be:<br />

➤ Suitably constructed (free from holes, slopes<br />

and uneven or slippery surfaces posing a risk<br />

<strong>to</strong> health or safety and have effective drainage<br />

where necessary)<br />

➤ Kept free from obstructions and an article or<br />

substance which may cause a person <strong>to</strong> slip,<br />

trip or fall<br />

➤ Traffi c routes which are staircases should be provided<br />

with handrails and guards where necessary<br />

➤ Where there is a risk of a person falling in<strong>to</strong> a dangerous<br />

substance in a tank, pit or structure, these<br />

must be securely fenced or covered<br />

➤ Windows or other transparent or translucent surfaces<br />

in a wall, partition, door or gate should be made of<br />

safety material or protected against breakage and<br />

be appropriately marked <strong>to</strong> make it apparent<br />

➤ Windows, skylights or ventila<strong>to</strong>rs which can be<br />

opened must be capable of being opened, closed or<br />

adjusted without exposing people <strong>to</strong> a risk <strong>to</strong> their<br />

health or safety<br />

➤ When open, windows, skylights or ventila<strong>to</strong>rs must<br />

not expose any person <strong>to</strong> risks <strong>to</strong> their health or<br />

safety<br />

➤ Windows and skylights must be designed or constructed<br />

so that they may be cleaned safely<br />

➤ Workplaces should be organised in such a way that<br />

pedestrians and vehicles can circulate safely<br />

➤ Traffi c routes should be suitably indicated and must<br />

be of suffi cient number, size and position and suitable<br />

<strong>to</strong> ensure that:<br />

➤ Pedestrians or vehicles can use it without causing<br />

danger <strong>to</strong> persons at work near it<br />

➤ There is suffi cient separation of any vehicle traffi<br />

c route from doors, gates or pedestrian routes<br />

which lead on<strong>to</strong> it<br />

➤ Where pedestrians and vehicles use the same<br />

route, there is suffi cient separation between<br />

them<br />

➤ Doors and gates should be of suitable construction<br />

(including being fi tted with any necessary safety<br />

devices) and:<br />

➤ Sliding doors or gates must have a device <strong>to</strong><br />

prevent them coming off their track during use<br />

➤ Any upward opening door or gate has a device<br />

<strong>to</strong> prevent it falling back<br />

➤ Powered doors or gates must have suitable and<br />

effective measures <strong>to</strong> prevent injury by trapping<br />

people<br />

➤ Where necessary, powered doors or gates<br />

should open manually unless they open au<strong>to</strong>matically<br />

if the power fails<br />

➤ Doors or gates which can be opened by either<br />

being pushed or pulled must have a clear view<br />

of both sides when closed<br />

➤ Escala<strong>to</strong>rs and moving walkways must function<br />

safely, have any necessary safety devices and be<br />

fi tted with one or more emergency s<strong>to</strong>p controls.<br />

15.32.3 <strong>Safety</strong> requirements – regulations<br />

20 <strong>to</strong> 25<br />

➤ Suitable and suffi cient sanitary conveniences should<br />

be provided which are:<br />

➤ Adequately ventilated and lit<br />

➤ Kept in a clean and orderly condition<br />

➤ Separate for men and women (except where<br />

they are in a separate room and can be secured<br />

from the inside)<br />

➤ Washing facilities should be provided (including<br />

showers where required), which are:<br />

➤ In the immediate vicinity of every sanitary<br />

convenience<br />

➤ In the vicinity of changing rooms where required<br />

➤ Available with a supply of clean hot and cold (or<br />

warm) water, soap and means of drying<br />

➤ Suffi ciently lit and ventilated<br />

➤ Kept in a clean and orderly condition
