Figure 32: There is too much legal <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> Alberta?<br />

A similar question was asked <strong>in</strong> the 2008 and 2009 population surveys (sample size <strong>of</strong> 3,001 <strong>in</strong><br />

2008 and 1,004 <strong>in</strong> 2009), where much different results were obta<strong>in</strong>ed (Figure 33). Although a<br />

significant number <strong>of</strong> people are content with the current availability <strong>of</strong> <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, the majority<br />

<strong>of</strong> people <strong>in</strong> both 2008 and 2009 believe that <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is too widely available. Very few people<br />

believe that <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is not sufficiently available.<br />

The Alberta Gam<strong>in</strong>g and Liquor Commission has conducted their own attitude surveys over the<br />

years with sample sizes <strong>of</strong> approximately 1,000 <strong>in</strong> each year (see Appendix B for details). One<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from these surveys is that most Albertans have limited awareness <strong>of</strong><br />

how <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> revenue is used. For example, despite be<strong>in</strong>g the repository for government<br />

(i.e., only 44% were aware <strong>in</strong> 2002, 47% <strong>in</strong> 2003, 45% <strong>in</strong> 2006, 43% <strong>in</strong> 2007).<br />
