<strong>in</strong>crease has occurred s<strong>in</strong>ce the early to mid 1990s. Also similar to Total Net Revenue, there has<br />

been a decrease <strong>in</strong> per adult expenditure s<strong>in</strong>ce its peak <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />

To put these figures <strong>in</strong> their proper context, however, it is important to know how much money<br />

this represents relative to available <strong>in</strong>come, and to also make adjustments for the <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong><br />

after tax <strong>in</strong>come that have occurred <strong>in</strong> the past 40 years. Thus, Figure 18 illustrates per adult<br />

Albertan <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> expenditure as a percentage <strong>of</strong> average after tax <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

Albertan tax filers as reported by Statistics Canada. After tax <strong>in</strong>come for <strong>in</strong>dividuals was not<br />

available for 2008 to 2010.<br />

The same basic pattern emerges <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> there be<strong>in</strong>g a significant <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> percentage <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>come spent on <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> over time, with most <strong>of</strong> the major <strong>in</strong>creases occurr<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

early to mid 1990s. However, two additional f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> importance are that a) average adult<br />

percentage <strong>of</strong> after tax <strong>in</strong>come spent on <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> has not really changed s<strong>in</strong>ce the mid 1990s,<br />

and b) the percentage <strong>of</strong> after tax <strong>in</strong>come spent on <strong>gambl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> recent years (2.5% to 3.0%) is<br />

not that large.<br />
