Geographical Distribution<br />

As seen <strong>in</strong> Figure 49, 3 treaty zones divide the prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Alberta: Treaty 6 signed <strong>in</strong> 1876,<br />

Treaty 7 signed <strong>in</strong> 1877, and Treaty 8 signed <strong>in</strong> 1899. A portion <strong>of</strong> Treaty 4 overlaps the<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ce’s south-eastern corner. This effectively splits the prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong>to three geographic zones<br />

(south, central, north) allow<strong>in</strong>g for comparative analyses <strong>of</strong> FNDF revenue distribution.<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> First Nations access<strong>in</strong>g FNDF revenues from each zone is as follows: 5 from the<br />

south; 17 from the central; and 22 from the north. The 5 host First Nations (2 south, 3 central)<br />

have been left out <strong>of</strong> this analysis as the amplified revenues skew overall results.<br />

View<strong>in</strong>g aggregate values, the northern Treaty 8 communities appear to be outstripp<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

Treaty partners <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> FNDF disbursements. In 2009-2010, dur<strong>in</strong>g which the FNDF<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased by 3.1% to $104 million, both Treaty 6 and Treaty 8 communities’ FNDF<br />
