1996 Alberta Rac<strong>in</strong>g Corporation is formed to help revitalize the decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g horse rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong><br />

Alberta (replac<strong>in</strong>g the Western Canadian Rac<strong>in</strong>g Association).<br />

The Alberta Gam<strong>in</strong>g and Liquor Act is enacted provid<strong>in</strong>g the regulatory framework for issu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gam<strong>in</strong>g licences and gam<strong>in</strong>g worker registration.<br />

1999 Alberta M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Gam<strong>in</strong>g is created, which <strong>in</strong>cludes the Department <strong>of</strong> Gam<strong>in</strong>g, the Alberta Gam<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and Liquor Commission, the Community Lottery Program Secretariat, the Alberta Gam<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Research</strong><br />

Council and Alberta Rac<strong>in</strong>g Corporation.<br />

2001 First Nations Gam<strong>in</strong>g Policy <strong>in</strong>troduced, allow<strong>in</strong>g potential development <strong>of</strong> First Nations cas<strong>in</strong>os on<br />

reserve land.<br />

2002 The 1999 moratorium on new cas<strong>in</strong>os removed after AGLC develops 8-step process for cas<strong>in</strong>o<br />

approval and expansion consistent with the recommendations <strong>of</strong> the Gam<strong>in</strong>g Licens<strong>in</strong>g Policy<br />

Review.<br />

The Alberta Rac<strong>in</strong>g Corporation is replaced with Horse Rac<strong>in</strong>g Alberta (HRA), whose mandate is to<br />

both regulate and revitalize the horse rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

2006 The Alberta Government abolishes the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Gam<strong>in</strong>g with most <strong>of</strong> these responsibilities<br />

devolv<strong>in</strong>g to the Solicitor General and the Alberta Gam<strong>in</strong>g and Liquor Commission.<br />
