provides a constructive vehicle through which group participants can receive and share<br />

information concerning their behavior, inferences, and constructs.<br />

If group members observing the interaction between Kathy and Tom provide Kathy<br />

with concrete examples of those behaviors that resulted in Tom’s forming the constructs<br />

“manipulative” and “defensive,” alternative methods of presentation might be<br />

considered by Kathy. It is also possible that Tom has made faulty inferences. In other<br />

words, he may have formed constructs concerning Kathy’s behavior that are<br />

inappropriate or invalid. Feedback to Tom, as the recipient of Kathy’s communications,<br />

should address the inappropriateness of his inferences, as these will eventually provide<br />

the basis for his behavioral response to Kathy. Finally, those involved in the feedback<br />

process can provide Kathy with alternative methods of presenting herself and can offer<br />

Tom alternative interpretations, if they are warranted.<br />

For example, if the group consensus is that the inferences Tom drew from Kathy’s<br />

behavior were inappropriate, and if alternative interpretations are offered (that is, that<br />

Kathy’s behavior indicates she is scared), Tom’s response to her might be support rather<br />

than confrontation. Figure 3 shows this process.<br />

This model can be used to provide a conceptual framework for the interpretation of<br />

both group and individual behavior. Using this model, awareness groups can serve two<br />

important functions. First, through the use of consensual validation, they can create<br />

sensitivity to the inferential process and its behavioral ramifications. Second, they can<br />

suggest alternative behavioral responses and provide a nonthreatening environment in<br />

which the members can experiment with these responses.<br />
