Practitioner 1 I couldn’t even hold in my head... let alone produce [them<br />

without the computer]<br />

Practitioner 2 …complexity is the key benefit - you can deal with much<br />

more and still handle them as an individual without having<br />

a big development team behind something<br />

Practitioner 3 Extending the creative potential of the artistic practitioner.<br />

Practitioner 4 They have allowed me to explore some means of<br />

expression like bits of animation which I have had a bit of an<br />

interest in but to be able to link that in a more integrated<br />

way to what I’m doing.<br />

Practitioner 5 It keeps me going. It’s a very fresh way of working.<br />

Practitioner 6 Degree of complexity, accuracy and detail otherwise<br />

unachievable. Quick manipulation of forms within the<br />

digital environment.<br />

When asked what the key benefit of using computer-based design and<br />

fabrication technologies was 2 (33%) practitioners thought the unique<br />

opportunities offered by these technologies to create objects not possible to<br />

produce by other means was most important. 2 (33%) practitioners noted the<br />

‘complexity’ these technologies afforded was significant. These responses<br />

mirror the findings of the previous survey of international practitioners (see<br />

section 4.3). In addition, 2 (33%) practitioners indicated the ability of these<br />

technologies to shift contexts towards smaller enterprises based on the skills of<br />

individual practitioners (Bunnell, 1998) as being vital.<br />
