discourses and nature of practice for the conventional disciplines (see section<br />

2.9.7). Collectively, these might represent an expanded cultural field beyond<br />

each of the traditional disciplines.<br />

The diagram above (Figure 75) is called the ‘Kanizsa Square’. One way of<br />

interpreting this optical illusion is that it is four black circles each with a quarter<br />

removed. Another is of a white square in front of four black circles. This shows<br />

how the researcher makes sense of this field of enquiry based on the insights<br />

gained from this study. The traditional art and design disciplines provide the<br />

background to this perceived field (a new hybrid model represented by the<br />

imposed white square) of the current area of enquiry. However, this new model<br />

of practice is dependent on the conception of these traditional disciplines (it<br />

supplements but doesn't supersede them). If you were to remove one you would<br />

no longer be able to locate (critically or culturally) the hybrid model of practice.<br />

The new models of practice proposed in this study represent the clustering of a<br />

multitude of practices now emerging. There is significant evidence of an<br />
