Lucifer
A sixteenth-century illustration of Dante’s vision of purgatory and hell. Lucifer is shown at
the center of the Earth, encased in a lake of ice, chewing on the soul of Judas Iscariot.
Reproduced by permission of Fortean Picture Library.
Lee Lehman associates this aspect with “torch bearers.” Jacob Schwartz gives Lucifer’s
astrological meaning as “a sometimes disruptive bearer of divine light.”
Lucifer also means light-bearer and is sometimes applied to Venus.
