REFRANATION<br />

Refranation is a technical term used in horary<br />

<strong>astrology</strong> referring to a situation in which a<br />

planet turns retrograde (reverses its apparent<br />

motion) before it completes an aspect to which<br />

it has been applying. In such a situation, <strong>the</strong><br />

matter for which <strong>the</strong> horary chart was cast will<br />

not result in a successful conclusion.<br />

REGIOMONTANUS<br />

(JOHANN MÜLLER)<br />

Regiomontanus (born Johann Müller), a<br />

German astronomer and astrologer, was born on<br />

June 6, 1436, in Königsberg, Germany. He<br />

established an observatory at Nuremberg, where<br />

he observed Halley’s comet. Regiomontanus<br />

also published ephemerides (tables of planetary<br />

Rome by Pope Sixtus IV to help devise <strong>the</strong> calendar.<br />

Regiomontanus was also <strong>the</strong> translator of<br />

Ptolemy’s Almagest. He died in Rome on July 6, 1476. He is best remembered by<br />

astrologers for <strong>the</strong> system of house division that bears his name.<br />

REGIOMONTANUS SYSTEM<br />

The Regiomontanus (Regiomontanean) system is a system of house division<br />

devised by Johann Müller (Regiomontanus was his pseudonym) in <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century.<br />

At one time it was <strong>the</strong> most popular sysem in Europe.<br />

REINCARNATION, KARMA, AND ASTROLOGY<br />

Reincarnation is <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory that each individual soul progressively incarnates<br />

in a succession of different bodies. Belief in reincarnation usually carries with it certain<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r, related notions, such as <strong>the</strong> idea that one is learning from one lifetime to<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r and that, in time, every soul will become perfected and consequently no<br />

longer need to return to corporeal form. Ano<strong>the</strong>r idea often associated with reincarna-<br />
