XIII. APPENDIX B: GIFT-GIVING UNDER KIM JONG-UN According to defector sources, the act of gift-giving has undergone significant change during the Kim Jong-un era. The slow down in the Royal Economy has forced Kim to increasingly rely on beneficiary acts and expressions of gratitude as opposed to giving gifts. Below are examples of this phenomena and how the North Korean media has characterized Kim Jong-un’s gift-giving.
