opportunity to discuss and link the employee s performance, career interests, and<br />

developmental needs into a coherent career plan.<br />

Many employers have formal programs to do this. For example, JCPenney s<br />

managerial performance appraisal form contains a listing of all jobs by title, function,<br />

and level that employees could conceivably want to consider. The company trains its<br />

supervisors to link the employee s performance, career interests, and corporate needs,<br />

and develop a career plan including development activities for the employee.<br />

However, even a simple form like the one shown in Figure 10-4 can suffice. The<br />

main thing is to help the manager and employee translate the latter s performance-based<br />

experiences for the year into tangible development plans and goals.<br />

Gender Issues in Career Development<br />

Women and men face different challenges as they advance through their careers. In one<br />

study, promoted women had to receive higher performance ratings than promoted<br />

men to get promoted, suggesting that women were held to stricter standards for<br />

promotion. 48 Women report greater barriers (such as being excluded from informal<br />
