der professional assistance free of charge to police officers when purchasing remounts at<br />

those fairs which are held in the horse-breeding circles under the control of the Army Remount<br />

Department.<br />

Rule 7.20<br />

7.20. Purchase of branded mares, etc. - <strong>Police</strong> officers are forbidden to purchase, as<br />

remounts for the police or for themselves, any mare of filly branded (E.I.), (G.I.),<br />

(G.I./V.), (G.I./P.), (G.I./A.), (G.I./C.), (stable number over (J.C.) or stable number over<br />

(L.B.) unless the owner or possessor of such animal produces a certificate from a competent<br />

authority authorizing the sale of such animal on the ground that she is barren.<br />

Purchasing officers and Superintendent shall be responsible that this order is strictly<br />

obeyed. Every facility shall be given to the owners of remounts purchased to compete in<br />

classes at shows, and for inspection by officials of the show and of the Civil Veterinary<br />

Department and Army Remount Department.<br />

Rule 7.21<br />

7.21. Purchases for individual officers. - Gazetted Officers to whom Government<br />

grants for the purchase of chargers have been made, and other gazetted officers and upper<br />

subordinates wishing to purchase charges may avail themselves of the assistance of purchasing<br />

officers in selecting suitable horses. In such cases all arrangements shall be made<br />

personally between the purchasing officer and the officer desiring his assistance, and the<br />

former shall be under no obligation to act, unless he receives in advance funds to cover<br />

the purchase.<br />

Rule 7.22<br />

7.22. Disposal of foals and cast animals. - (1) Cast horses and camels shall be sold,<br />

provided that any animal, which by reason of permanent injury cannot be worked without<br />

cruelty, shall be destroyed. Foals of horses and camels borne on the Chanda are the property<br />

of the fund and shall be sold as soon as they have reached a suitable age. Expenses<br />

incurred in their keep to the time of sale shall be borne by the fund. Proceeds of sales under<br />

this rule shall be credited to the fund.<br />

(2) The use for breeding of mares borne on the Chanda and of all mares entered in the<br />

register maintained under rule 7.32(1) is prohibited; provided that this rule may be relaxed<br />

on the authority of the Deputy Inspector-General of the range on the recommendations of<br />

a veterinary officer or for other special reasons.<br />

Rule 7.23<br />

7.23. Veterinary treatment. - (1) All charges for medical treatment of horses and camels<br />

when such is not rendered necessary by ill-treatment or carelessness on the part of a<br />

subscriber, and for the castration of horses and camels when such operations are specially<br />

ordered by the Superintendent, shall be borne by the fund. Veterinary Surgeons and Assistants,<br />

however, whether in the Government service for employees of local bodies, have<br />

been directed to afford medical and surgical assistance gratis to all police horses brought<br />

to them.<br />

(2) As soon as a remount is accepted for the Chanda Fund, the Superintendent of <strong>Police</strong>,<br />

or the purchasing officer, shall have a veterinary sheet prepared for each horse or camel<br />

in I.A.F. V-1752. This sheet will always accompany the animals, and each time the animal<br />

is sent to the veterinary officer, the history sheet shall be sent with it for that officer<br />

to enter his remarks therein. In no circumstances shall these history sheets be destroyed,<br />

duplicates issued or any alterations made in the original description of the animal, without<br />

the authority of the Superintendent of <strong>Police</strong>. Duplicate sheets will be marked as such.<br />

This endorsement and any alteration in the description on a sheet, whether original or duplicate,<br />

will be signed and dated by the Superintendent of <strong>Police</strong>. Copies of the form<br />

referred to above are obtainable from the Central <strong>Police</strong> Office.<br />

Rule 7.24<br />

7.24. Feeding and up-keep of horses and camels. - (1) The cost of feeding and, in the
