PROFILING EUROPEAN CLIL CLASSROOMS

European practice in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is highly diverse with many
different ‘types’ commonplace. Although individually distinct, such types have much in common because
the reasons for implementing CLIL are usually heavily inter-woven in practice.
This book provides a description of five CLIL dimensions relating to culture, environment, language,
content, and learning, as found in schools and colleges across Europe. Each of these dimensions
comprises differing focus points that are realised according to a number of major factors, such as agerange,
sociolinguistic environment, and the degree of exposure to CLIL.
Although derived from the original English text, the versions in Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Spanish
have been authored separately to suit specific interests. These texts, Dimensions of Content and
Language Integrated Learning, complement data depicting nearly 100 examples drawn from 26 European
countries which can be found on the Internet at www.clilcompendium.com.
Profiling European CLIL Classrooms has been produced by a project team coordinated by Anne Maljers
of Europees Platform voor het Nederlandse Onderwijs (The Netherlands) and David Marsh of Jyväskylän
yliopisto (Finland). The partnership includes Dieter Wolff of Bergische Universität Gesamthochschule
Wuppertal (Germany), Carmen Pérez-Vidal of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain) and Do Coyle of the
University of Nottingham (UK).
