Introduce the Wider Cultural Context
Terms such as enculturation, acculturation, cultural adaptation and others have been
used over the years to refer to a situation in which trans-migrant individuals learn to
live in a different society to that of their early years or their forebears. CLIL can be used
to facilitate such processes of cultural/linguistic adaptation.
Key CLIL Features
➔
➔
Common to immigrant and other forms of trans-migrant school context where a
group of learners may have a range of differing first languages
Often requires special support mechanisms (native speaker assistants) and
arrangements (team teaching) to be successfully implemented
Examples
•
•
Primary school where classes have children from several trans-migrant ethnic
backgrounds in which the majority language needs to be cultivated in direct relation
to their respective first languages
Found in special classes that exist to accommodate special needs arising from
linguistic diversity
