Results of the questionnaires
most cases on the same side against other interest groups
(industry, energy, forestry...).
A good example was a plan to build coal thermoelectric power
plant in Nature reserve Velebit on the northern Adriatic coast.
Both tourism and ecologists were against the project and the
location of the plant was therefore changed
The similar thing happened with the rejection of planned
second phase of Plomin thermoelectric power plant on Istria
peninsula (Croatia’s most important tourist region).
Albanie No business relationship exists currently between public
bodies responsible for tourism and those for the environment.
In the framework of building the institutional capacity to
manage and implement action plans for tourism and
environmental management, these relationships could be
established soon.
Grèce Comités de travail entre les deux institutions publiques (projet
spécial portant sur le développement touristique et la
préservation durable du littoral et des î les).
Turquie Both relevant Ministries and their provincial units collaborate
for the development of tourism without harming the
environment.
Chypre
A protocol is signed (8.5.1998) by the Ministry of Environment
and S.P.O for the application of “ National Environmental
Action Plan ” (NEAP). The protocol describes the
responsibilities of the both parties.
The goals of NEAP identified by the preparation process are:
• increased environmental awareness
• better quality of life
• improved environmental management
• sustainable economic, social and cultural development.
The key findings of the NEAP preparation process can be
summarised as:
• the existing system of environmental management, assessed is not up to
the task of addressing many of Turkey’s key environmental issues.
• enhancing information and awareness are the highest priorities identified
by the participatory process for the NEAP.
• the problem areas will require specific new investments in order to
protect, manage and rehabilitate Turkey’s environment.
Through the various committees and co-ordinating
mechanisms between the public and the private sectors on the
tourism-related issues, there is in most cases a common ground
