tourism in the region. The establishment of this organisation<br />

is an initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and we think<br />

that this experiment is very successful and has to be applied<br />

also to other cities.<br />

Med-Cities Involvement - The author is involved in two levels :<br />

• at the local municipal level, he is the person in charge for the<br />

elaboration of the town planning land use plan as well as for the<br />

preservation and revitalisation of the historic centre of the town.<br />

• at the Med-cities Network, he is involved in the elaboration of<br />

environmental audits and action plans for the City of Limassol and the<br />

City of Silifke in the south of Turkey<br />

Challenge - Tourism is a major challenge because of the very<br />

high tourist attraction to the Mediterranean area. There is a<br />

rising high pressure on the environment. From the other<br />

hand, sustainability is the only way to preserve the<br />

environment and the character of the Mediterranean areas as<br />

to preserve the environment but also the diversity, richness<br />

and typical characteristics of the Mediterranean regions and<br />

preserve in this way the tourism capital of the areas.<br />

Initiatives - We launched new innovative and diverse tourism<br />

products oriented to local traditions, history and archaeology,<br />

and why not local « cuisine » . Examples of these actions exist<br />

in Limassol (Cyprus) and Silifke (Turkey).<br />

Partners - These products were launched with the local<br />

authorities as well as with the professionals of all related<br />

disciplines and the local population.<br />

Evaluation - The success or failure is related to the positive<br />

attraction to specialised small or medium tour-operators and<br />

the lesser impact on the environment.<br />
