2.16 Urn-al Tuyur region on the Mediterranean coast * - SYRIA
Geographical framework
Location: North-west coast 3500 meters long with an area of 300 hectares. This
area has pine and oak forests.
Attractivity factors
• The area is used for tourism purposes only with the maintenance of
environment.
• The Ministry of Tourism owns a coastal-band of 178 km.
• This region has 3500 meters long with an area of 300 hectares.
• This region lies at 40 km north of Latakia City in a mountainous area
covered by beautiful pine forests.
• The beach is sandy and soft, it stretches on 3500 m long and 45 m large.
Main parties
The land is owned by the Ministry of Tourism.

Tourist development retrospective
The Syrian Arab Republic has considered tourism as an important source for
foreign currency. The Ministry of Tourism and the Higher Council of Tourism were
established in 1972 with the main aims of promoting tourism industry and
formulating strategies for sustainable development and subsequent investment
with preserving the ancient monuments and environment.
Measures for tourism development and its integration into a
system of sustainable development
The Ministry of Tourism and the Higher Council of Tourism have adopted all
priorities for integration into system of sustainable development.
Developments currently ongoing
• A Master Tourism Plan was adopted by the Syrian Ministry of Tourism to
develop the coast area.
• This Master Plan covers other areas including deserts, archaeological
treasures and natural resources for the development of tourism industry.
• Establishing of several tourist projects.
